Penfolds RWT Shiraz is made with Barossa Valley shiraz matured in (this year) 80 percent new French oak. It was first released with the 1997 vintage, launched in 2000. This is a fresh, silken, seductive release. Blueberries, intense blackberry, and blue-faced oak. Fresh-tilled earth, coffee, soy. Voluptuous and generous and drawn with tremendously fine, strong chains of tannin. The tannin profile here sets it apart; this will age (very) long term. Gloriously engineered. Glorious length. Fresh, saucy new oak plays a key role, true to the history of this wine, but it’s hard to argue against the idea that this will age magnificently over the long term. 95 Points, Drink 2018-2028+.
