The 2017 Barolo Sarmassa is a powerful, burly wine. Darker shades of Nebbiolo emerge from a Barolo that is at once powerful and translucent. Cinnamon, orange peel and star anise add an exotic flair. I would give the tannins a few years to soften. The 2017 Sarmassa is a Barolo with real staying power and substance.

Firmly structured, this opens with aromas of star anise, leather, camphor and scorched forest floor. Full-bodied and still youthfully austere, the palate offers Morello cherry, licorice and tobacco framed in tightly wound, assertive tannins. It's nervy and needs time to fully develop to its full potential.
