Benjamin Leroux Corton Grand Cru 2012

Winery: Benjamin Leroux
Region: Corton
Wine: Corton Grand Cru
Variety: Red Burgundy
Vintage: 2012
UOM: 750ml

This rarity mostly comes from one of the last existing red vineyards planted in Le Charlemagne (there is also a tiny amount of Pinot from Les Pougets in the blend). Leroux tells us that he was spurred on to make this wine after a conversation with one of Corton's famous growers who lamented the fact that almost all of the Pinot vines on this side of the hill have been grafted over (much easier to sell Corton Charlemagne than it is to sell Corton Rouge). This grower spoke with passionate fondness of Charlemagne's red wines of yesterday and Leroux was hooked. He wanted to see what effect Charlemagne's famously mineral terroir would have on Pinot Noir and so he searched and found a parcel of vines that would allow him just enough grapes to fashion a very limited 'retro-cuvée'. It's an incredibly mineral and earthy wine with great finesse and notes of small red fruits, grenadine and crushed rocks. The finish is long and savoury. We can tell the wine only saw 20% new oak compared to 50% in the other Grand Crus, surely a sign that we are looking at something quite unique. It can't be named Charlemagne even though it comes exclusively from the Le Charlemagne vineyard, that name is exclusively for the whites of this AOC. - Importer notes
