Massolino - Top of the Piedmont heirarchy

Massolino is proudly guided by the dedicated efforts of Franco and Roberto Massolino, alongside the talented winemaker Giovanni Angeli. The winery is fortunate to have an extraordinary selection of vineyards, including the esteemed Vigna Rionda, where they nurture 3.5 hectares of exquisite vines. The high-altitude, chalky hillsides of Serralunga are celebrated for creating some of the most exceptional Barolo wines, showcasing intense fruit flavors and remarkable minerality. Today, Massolino's Nebbiolo wines truly embody both purity and elegance, harmoniously blending traditional and contemporary winemaking techniques.

A few weeks ago, we were thrilled to host Giovanni at MW for a masterclass that was both enlightening and entertaining. The wines showcased during the session performed exceptionally well, with the 2021 Baroli standing out for their power, elegance, and approachability. This vintage continues to impress us, and given that the grapes are handled by a winery that Antonio Galloni describes as 'the top of the Piedmont hierarchy,' it’s no surprise that these wines are so delicious!

2022 Dolcetto d'Alba DOC

The 2022 Dolcetto d'Alba is a beautifully fragrant wine. Crushed flowers, mint and red/purplish fruit all grace this understated, classy Dolcetto. The 2022 is bit light in body, as almost all wines are in this year, but balance and harmony are very much present.

2024 Barbera d'Alba DOC

This bright, delicious, drink-now style of Barbera was fermented for 10 to 12 days in stainless steel and cement tanks. It was then raised in the same vessels for a short period before bottling and release. As always, meticulous selection, impressive vineyards and low yields form the blueprint. It’s bright and refreshing, with gorgeous bitter cherry and amaro-like, macerated orange rind notes woven through the perfumed and sparklingly pure palate.

2023 Langhe Nebbiolo DOC

This is ripe, fleshy and seductive yet also so fine and pure, and with classic powdery tannins, superb complexity and a long, perfumed finish. In short, it’s ridiculous value! Vinification was in concrete, with very gentle extraction, and aging was in large Slavonian oak casks (like all Massolino Nebbiolo) for 12 months, as opposed to 24-plus months for the Barolo wines. A touch more buoyant than recent releases, the wine closes with a lick of smoky charcuterie that gives the finish a saline kick. To call this a bargain is a significant understatement!

The Massolino 2022 Barbaresco shows a light ruby appearance and a pretty luminosity. The wine is not too intense aromatically, but it does give a good showing of cassis, redcurrant and wild cherry. There are etched mineral notes at the back with blue flower and lilac. This Barbaresco is delicate and finessed, despite the hot vintage. It does a good job of capturing the quieter and less exuberant side of 2022.

2022 Barbaresco 'Albesani' DOCG'

The Massolino 2022 Barbaresco Albesani shows structure and focus. The wine reveals a vertical delivery of fruit aromas along with crushed stone, sambuca and blue flower. There is a salty note at the end, and the wine shows polished, finely grained tannins. Albesani is another example of a wine that defies the heat of the vintage to show elegance and grace.

The Massolino 2021 Barolo reveals a shiny ruby color and a core of dark fruit. Beyond the plummy fruit is tar, licorice, pressed flower and campfire ash. This wine has a pronounced savory side, yet it all fits squarely into a very delicate and finessed delivery. This is a pretty example of the vintage.

The Massolino 2021 Barolo Margheria draws its fruit from Serralunga d'Alba. It reveals aromas of forest berry and wild cherry with candied orange, flint and crushed granite. I also find toasted aniseed at the back. The team at Massolino has done great work managing the tannins that feel quite silky and long, rendering a glossy sheen to the finish.

2021 Barolo 'Parussi' DOCG

The Massolino 2021 Barolo Parussi draws its fruit from Castiglione Falletto at the center of the appellation with an interesting overlay of old and newer soils. This wine is less immediately aromatic and needs extra time in the glass to develop and flesh out. At this young stage, it delivers tight wild berry and you also get a pretty signature of crushed limestone. That elegant mineral note ties in nicely with the silky tannins. The Parussi excels in a balanced vintage such as this.

2019 Barolo Riserva 'Vigna Rionda' DOCG

The Massolino 2019 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda is quite special in that it offers dark fruit, tar, campfire ash and burnt ember. It shows the power and heft of the vintage with the concentration, although in appearance, the wine is shiny and bright. It has a very beautiful mouthfeel with a glossy sheen to the tannins. In fact, the palate is the best part of this expertly crafted Riserva. It comes together with more dark fruit and savory tobacco.
