The Standard Bearer of Meursault - Domaine Buisson-Charles

by Hugh French | Mar 27, 2024

Domaine Buisson-Charles

“Any excess is harmful and balance remains the key word whatever the vintage...floral scents, finesse, elegance, elements which can find their original score in all vintages.”
Patrick Essa, Winemaker

Nestled in the heart of Meursault, Domaine Buisson-Charles has become the standard bearer for Meursault. Family-owned for several generations, Buisson-Charles is now run by Catherine Buisson, her husband, Patrick Essa and since 2020, their son Louis Essa, who has taken the reins of vineyard management and winemaking.

Their vineyard holdings are centred around the Domaine in Meursault, with several other parcels around the Coted’Or, particularly in Volnay and Pommard. Their various sites around the Cote d’Or house many vines over 40 years of age while some are over 100 years old. It is noteworthy that the life in the vineyard and the health of the vines always seem to be starkly better than their immediate neighbours – proof of the fastidious attention that is paid to the vines.

In 2021, the skills of all vignerons were heavily challenged, first by the severe frosts in April and then by bouts of odium and botrytis, with yields significantly impacted, particularly in whites. At Buisson-Charles, some parcels were down by as much as 80% and unfortunately, the worst affected were their four Premier Cru Meursault parcels. Consequently, these parcels were blended into one superb Premier Cru ‘In Memoriam’.

The good news is that the quality of the wines is exceptional, as attested to by the scores from Burghound below. The whites continue to go from strength to strength, they are simply brilliant. But perhaps the bigger surprise
is the continual improvement in the quality of the reds, which are now beginning to rival the quality of the whites. These can't be recommended highly enough.

2021 Bourgogne Aligote 'Hors Classe'
Usually $109 - Special Offer $99

"A ripe and very spicy nose combines notes of white peach and citrus confit with those of green apple and anise hints. There is both excellent density and energy to the utterly delicious medium-bodied flavors that conclude in a bitter zest-inflected finale. This is excellent for its level.”
87-89 Points - Outstanding Burghound.com

2021 Bourgogne Blanc
Usually $109 - Special Offer $99

“A cooler and more floral-suffused nose speaks mostly of white orchard fruit and more subtle lemon-lime influence. The delicious middleweight flavors also possess impressive mid-palate density while offering well above-average depth and persistence. This is also excellent.”
87-89 Points - Outstanding Burghound.com

2021 Meursault 'Vigne de 1945'
Usually $279 - Special Offer $249

“This is also pungently reduced with the only perceptible aromas that of wood toast. The medium weight flavors are not quite as dense though they are noticeably finer with stunningly good intensity along with excellent delineation on the even more complex and lingering finale. This is terrific.”
91-93 Points - Outstanding Burghound.com

2021 Meursault 1er Cru 'In Memoriam'
Usually $349 - Special Offer $319

“There is a whiff of the phenolic to the aromas of hazelnut, acacia blossom, citrus confit and white peach, all of which is trimmed in just enough wood to merit mentioning. The medium-weight plus flavors possess outstanding mid-palate density while displaying excellent power on the sappy, balanced and strikingly long finale. This could use better depth but more should almost certainly develop. This is terrific.”
92-95 Points - Outstanding Burghound.com

2021Chablis 1er Cru 'A Gauche de Serein'
Usually $139 - Special Offer $115

“There is plenty of typical Chablis elements on the nose of quinine, iodine, oyster shell and cool green apple wisps. The racy, delineation and nicely voluminous flavors culminate in a saliva-inducing and very dry but not really austere finale that could use better depth.”
89-91 Points - Outstanding Burghound.com

2021 Pouilly Fuisse 1er Cru 'La Marachaude'
Usually $149 - Special Offer $125

“A restrained, cool and smoky nose registers ripe yet fresh aromas of citrus, green apple and a hint of quinine. The rich and generously proportioned medium weight flavors possess both excellent punch and evident power that builds on the beautifully long if not quite as complex finale.”
90-93 Points - Outstanding Burghound.com

2020 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru 'Le Cailleret'
Usually $589 - Special Offer $525

“A very cool and restrained nose grudgingly reveals its aromas of various white orchard fruit, acacia blossom, jasmine tea and exotic spice wisps. The racy medium weight flavors possess a sophisticated texture despite not being especially dense while delivering excellent persistence. This is very classy and impeccably well-balanced and as such, should easily reward a decade plus of keeping.”
91-93 Points - Outstanding Burghound.com

2020 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru 'Combettes'
Usually $479 - Special Offer $449

“A more elegant and cooler nose combines notes of a plethora of floral elements that are complemented by notes of apple, pear and spice. There is really lovely refinement to the lilting, pure and intense middle-weight flavors that offer outstanding length and focused power on the balanced finale. This is impressive and very Combettes as it's almost delicate.”
91-94 Points - Outstanding Burghound.com

2020 Meursault 1er Cru 'La Piece Sous le Bois'
Usually $349 - Special Offer $300

Not reviewed. Typically one of the finest Meursault 1er Crus, positioned high up abutting the forest, above Meursault 1er Cru ‘Perrieres’.

2021 Pommard 1er Cru 'Clos Micot'
Usually $249 - Special Offer $220

“Classic ruby color. A perfumed and again, decidedly cool nose reveals its airy aromas of essence of red pinot fruit, anise, orange peel and a violet hint. The gorgeously textured medium-bodied flavors are more refined though noticeably less mineral-driven while display very fine length on the solidly persistent finish where just a touch of Pommard rusticity eventually emerges.”
90-93 Points - Outstanding Burghound.com

2021 Savigny-Les-Beaune 1er Cru 'Les Marconnets'
Usually $159 - Special Offer $130

“Slightly earthier aromas of red berries and forest floor are trimmed in all but invisible wood. As one would reasonably expect, there is better volume, weight and mid-palate volume to the sleek and vibrant medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the balanced and youthfully austere finale. This is firm enough to warrant at least a few years of patience.”
89-92 Points - Burghound.com

2021 Beaune 1er Cru 'Les Teurons'
Usually $169 - Special Offer $140

“Elegant, pure and equally fresh aromas are comprised by notes of red currant, anise and pretty floral wisps. The detailed and silky textured medi um-bodied flavors possess a gorgeous mouthfeel while exuding a refreshing salinity on the youthfully austere and sneaky long finale. If this is able to add depth with time in bottle, my projected range might be too conservative.”
90-92 Points -Burghound.com

2021 Volnay 1er Cru 'Santenots'
Usually $299 - Special Offer $260

“A strikingly floral-suffused nose reflects additional notes of equally cool and airy red cherry, raspberry, and an admirably subtle touch of oak. There is more size, weight and power to the even more refined medium-weight flavors that exhibit outstanding length on the youthfully austere and notably more complex finale. This lovely if decidedly firm effort should amply reward a decade-plus of keeping.”
91-94 Points - Outstanding Burghound.com

2021 Corton Grand Cru
Usually $329 - Special Offer $290

“Here too the oak influence is prominent enough to mention while remaining a background element on the aromas of earthy and spicy red and dark currant. The is excellent intensity to the racy and appealingly textured bigger-bodied flavors that offer solid depth and persistence on the youthfully austere and bitter pit fruit-inflected finale. While certainly built-to-age, this could actually be approached after only 5 to 7 years.”
90-93 Points - Burghound.com

2021 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru
Usually $849 - Special Offer $720

“This is sufficiently reduced such that only discreet floral and oak toast hints peek through. The tension-filled, fresh and lacy middleweight flavors culminate in a moderately austere, linear and slightly lean finish that could use more flesh. While certainly perfectly good, it's not clear if this won't always be a bit skinny for a Gevrey grand cru.”
89-92 Points - Burghound.com

2021 Chambertin Grand Cru
Usually $1299 - Special Offer $1125

“The oak regimen is less subtle with its menthol and toast elements that can be found on the ultra-fresh and markedly floral nose of various red berries and pungent earth. The bigger, richer and notably more powerful flavors are also markedly more mineral-driven while exhibiting excellent complexity on the balanced if youthfully austere finale. This is a classic Chambertin that will need extended keeping as it's very compact at present.”
92-95 Points - Burghound.com
