The Brilliant Barolo of Mauro Veglio

by Hugh French | Aug 12, 2022

Mauro Veglio

"It will be interesting to see what Alessandro Veglio does as he takes his family's winery into its second generation. So far, the wines have shown a lighter touch that is quite appealing. The 2018s were whole berry fermented and saw 20-25 days on the skins. Malolactic fermentation was done in steel. The wines were aged in barrique (30% new for the vineyard designates), except the Paiagallo, which was aged in cask. There is a ton of potential here."

2018 Barolo DOCG
Usually $94 - Special Offer $86

"Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Fragrant, elegant, sweet and concentrated red-fruit nose with a peppery tingle and balsamic touches and a touch of cinnamon bark. With aeration salty, minerally hints creep up on the nose. Sappy red fruit and crunchy tannins add grip to the succulent fruit finish. Elegant and fresh."

2018 Barolo 'Castelletto' DOCG
Usually $145 - Special Offer $134

"The 2018 Barolo Castelletto is a powerful, deep wine that is not ready to show all its cards yet. Then again, this is Monforte Barolo we are talking about. Dried herbs, iron chalk, white pepper, crushed flowers and mint all grace this inward, brooding Barolo from Veglio. A whole range of savory, earth and mineral notes abound."

"Concentrated lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Savoury and concentrated with fully integrated oak notes adding a spicy edge to the wine. Plenty of sour-cherry fruit on the palate. Generous and youthful with a layer of long, polished tannins. Perhaps the most approachable of their 2018 Barolos, but also has potential to age."

2018 Barolo 'Gattera' DOCG
Usually $145 - Special Offer $134

"The 2018 Barolo Gattera marries the natural exuberance of this site with a feeling of translucence I have not seen here previously. This is the first vintage that blends Mauro Veglio's south-facing parcel with Alessandro Veglio's south-east facing piece, a combination that works so well. Dark cherry, plum, spice, lavender and licorice infuse the 2018 with layers of nuance. The 2018 is beautifully done. Moreover, the 2018 bodes very well for the future"

"Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Full firm nose of ripe cherry fruit with just a touch of savoury oak. Lots of ripe sour-cherry and raspberry fruit on the palate. The ripe grainy tannic charge is perfectly aligned with the generous fruit. Very long and fruit-driven but still in its infancy. The tannins are like tiny pebbles on a gravel road cutting through the fruit."

2018 Barolo 'Arborina' DOCG
Usually $145 - Special Offer $134

"A shade deeper than the Classico Barolo. Perfumed and concentrated with more noticeable oak (30% new oak). Still quite compact. Salty and liquorice hints. Concentrated and fine. Lots of stuffing on the palate too, while still a little embryonic. Finely grained, long tannins adding drama to the concentrated supple fruit on the finish."

2018 Barolo 'Paiagallo' DOCG
Usually $205 - Special Offer $189

"The 2018 Barolo Paiagallo is delicate, ethereal and beautifully perfumed. Sweet pipe tobacco, orange peel, mint, dried cherry, licorice and incense are all laced together in this very pretty, nuanced Barolo. The Paiagallo is the one Barolo in this range aged in cask."

2016 Barolo 'Rocche dell'Annunziata' Riserva DOCG
Usually $245 - Special Offer $224

"Beautiful lustrous ruby. Sweet cherry fruit mingled with oak but with aeration becomes more perfumed while the oak recedes. Mouth-filling sweet-sour cherry fruit with bags of fine coating tannins. Very long and concentrated and poised at the same time. Still very youthful and generous and finely balanced."
