A Snapshot of One of Rioja's Best - Valenciso

by Hugh French | Mar 31, 2022

Valenciso

“This wine [Valenciso Rioja Riserva] is, year in, year out, among the best in its category.”
Luis Gutierrez, The Wine Advocate

Hot on the heels of a magnificent Valenciso Rioja dinner at Movida Aqui last night, we thought we'd strike while the iron is hot, and these stunning Riojan wines are fresh in our memories. We came away from the evening impressed by how elegant, and fresh the entire lineup was. The back vintage wines were especially remarkable and showed us all how distinguished aged Tempranillo in the hands of a master producer can be. The wines were seductive and refined and laid down the challenge to any preconceived sentiments on the bulk produced Rioja of old.

Valenciso is the team of Luis Valentin (Valen...) and Carmen Enciso (...ciso). From small beginnings in the Rioja Alta, the pair now have an enviable collection of ancient vines (up to an average age of 100 years in some vineyards!). Organically grown since inception, Luis and Carmen go to extraordinary lengths to ensure the fruit from their vines produce some of the best fruit in Rioja.

2019 Rioja Graciano
Usually $114 - Special Offer $104

“Graciano has its fans,” says Luis Valentín and this wine could add a few more of them. Built on a foundation of acidity and tannin, it’s peppery and intense with lots of damson and blackberry fruit, perfumed oak and the shuddering grip that’s typical of the variety.

2018 Rioja 'Laderas de Cabama'
Usually $45 - Special Offer $39

Laderas de Cabama is 100% Tempranillo, crafted from a single plot of 35-year-old vines, sited on the classic clay/limestone soil profile of the Rioja Alta at 550 metres above sea level. From this 2018 vintage, Valenciso has sought to craft Laderas de Cabama in a younger, more fruit-forward style. Hence, the fruit was picked a little earlier and the winemaking employed a portion of whole-berry, carbonic fermentation, bringing a more primary and juicy profile. No new oak was used, instead fermentation was in cool concrete, followed by 14 months in used French oak barrels.

2018 Rioja 'Cemento'
Usually $54 - Special Offer $48

This enticingly packaged new red does what is says on the label and was fermented and aged in concrete. Spicy and understated with plenty of sappy intensity, lovely purity and layers of crunchy plum and black cherry fruit. A promising début.

2001 Rioja Riserva
Usually $89 - Special Offer $84

The 2001 Valenciso Reserva is an outstanding, fairly priced effort representative of that great vintage in Rioja. Deeply colored, it offers a beautiful nose of scorched earth, tobacco, vanilla, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. It combines a velvety, almost Burgundian, palate feel with superb depth, ripe flavors, and enough structure to evolve for several more years. It should easily last for a decade.”
Jay Miller, The Wine Advocate

2011 Rioja Riserva
Usually $89 - Special Offer $84

I was quite pleasantly surprised by the 2011 Reserva, a wine from an extremely warm year when ripe and excessively developed wines abound. This 2011 seems to have improved with bottle age, and its elegant and balanced side definitely wins over the ripeness of the year. The oak feels very integrated and the palate terribly balanced. A great 2011.

2014 Rioja Riserva
Usually $79 - Special Offer $70

Cooler vintages like 2014 are ideally suited to the Valenciso style, which always has one eye on longevity and bottle age. This refined Tempranillo comes from vineyards in Briones, Haro, Ollauri, Rodezno and Villalba and has an appealing combination of structure, depth and minerality, with fine 20% new oak integration and layers of bramble, raspberry and black cherry fruit.
