Superb Old Vine Barossa Shiraz & Cabernet - Elderton

by Hugh French | Mar 03, 2022

Elderton

The real strength behind the Elderton success is the ancient 72 acre Barossa floor vineyard, which produces fruit of the highest quality year in year out. Each block on the property is cherished but the two standouts are the Command Shiraz block, planted 1894, and the Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon block, planted 1944.

Owned and operated by the Ashmead Family since 1980, Elderton is one of the great producers of Barossa Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. The secret to these tremendous wines is the astonishingly old vines from which the fruit is harvested. Rich and complex, they age incredibly well and carry all the hallmarks of top quality Barossa Valley wine. We recently tasted through the lineup below and were taken aback by how supple and unctuous these were while also displaying delightfully refreshing acidity to keep us going back for more.

2019 Barossa Shiraz
Usually $32 - Special Offer $27

This is about as crowd-pleasing as they come. Sweet, dark, berried fruit flavour matched to syrupy vanillin oak. It oozes both flavour and smoothness of texture. Nothing out of place here.

2019 Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon
Usually $32 - Special Offer $27

Quite intense cassis aromas on offer here with a gently leafy edge, some tarry elements, leafy notes and black olives. The palate has a fresh, elegantly delivered tannin structure with blueberry and cassis flavors and some pastry-like layering at the finish. Drink over the next five years.

2019 Neil Ashmead GTS Shiraz
Usually $55 - Special Offer $49

Estate fruit from Greenock. Matured 21 months in 40% new French oak puncheons and hogsheads. Layers of spicy red and black berry/cherry fruits are well defined on the bouquet. Firm, new French oak asserts its presence on the back palate in both high-cocoa dark chocolate impact and firm, dry tannin grip. It boasts the fruit carry to hold out, making this a Grand Tourer to go the distance.

2019 Ode to Lorraine Cabernet Blend
Usually $55 - Special Offer $49

Barossa blend of mostly cabernet sauvignon (47%) and shiraz (46%) but with a dab of merlot (7%). All French oak, 15% new. All estate grown. Vine age ranging from 15 to 75 years.

Ripe fruit flavour and lots of it, though everything remains neat and everything runs smoothly. Blackcurrant, saltbush and plum with clove, violet and chocolate notes littered judiciously throughout. What this wine offer is warm, ripe, straightforward delivery of bold fruit flavour. It’s good now but it has lots of years up its sleeve.

2019 Ashmead Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
Usually $109 - Special Offer $95

From 75yo estate vines in Nuriootpa. Matured 18 months in new French oak hogsheads and puncheons. Old vines have upheld integrity in crunchy redcurrant and pomegranate fruit, even rosehip lift and red capsicum varietal markers. It holds its ripeness with poise, thanks to a vibrant acid line, joining with confident, medium-grained tannins to sustain a very long aftertaste. Dark chocolate French oak has been well played to build endurance without stealing the limelight. A very strong result for Ashmead in this drought season. Bravo.

Ashmead by name, command by nature. This stakes its claim on quality firmly and squarely. Dense-but fresh blackcurrant, mint, redcurrant and boysenberry, with cedarwood oak integrated to perfection. It’s slippery-smooth and soft, despite its density; it’s fresh with acidity and licoricey through the finish. It was a hot season but this feels pitch perfect.

2018Command Single Vineyard Shiraz
Usually $139- Special Offer $120

From 124yo estate vines in Nuriootpa. Matured 30 months in new American and French oak puncheons. Brooding Barossa shiraz of billowing character. Smoked mettwurst and pan juices. Spicy dark and red berries of all kinds. No small dollop of milk chocolate oak. Quintessential Barossa, replete with generous breadth and enduring length, sustained by fine-ground tannins of considerable endurance.

For such a serious, richly-fruited wine it sure is more-ish, even in its relative youth. It all slides down with such ease. Sweet, soft plum flavours lead gently into (even) darker blackberry; coffee bean oak weds to dark earth notes; clove notes wash through vanilla and redcurrant. It’s seductive courtesy both of its style and of its substance. This is another top-grade release.
