Domaine Gramenon - Astounding Cotes-du-Rhone

by Hugh French | Feb 16, 2022

Domaine Gramenon

South of Montelimar, where the A7 Autoroute passes the aptly named ‘Porte du Soleil’, the wine producing regions of the southern, or ‘Meridionale’ Rhône commence. This is the gateway to Provence and the Mediterranean. It is in this very northern outpost where you will find one of the very best producers in the entire Rhône valley, Domaine Gramenon.

Domaine Gramenon is one of the exceptional properties in the Southern Rhone. Impossible to track down, these wines show hallmarks of great finesse, grace, perfume and depth. Whilst these are not usually words to describe Grenache from the Southern Rhone, these are certainly no ordinary wines and undoubtedly incomparable with any other Cotes du Rhone.

Gramenon has become famous over the past 25 years because of the talent and dedicated work of Philippe Laurent, then his wife Michelle, and now Michelle and their son Maxime. More recently, Maxime has begun flexing his winemaking prowess with his own cuvees also made at Domaine Gramenon, which we are delighted to offer below.

A reminder that these wines are extremely sought after and only available in the tiniest of quantities. Place your order now to avoid disappointment.

Domaine Gramenon

2020 Cotes-du-Rhone 'La Sagresse'
Usually $79 - Special Offer $74

'La Sagesse' translates to 'the wise one' and is produced from 2 parcels of 60 year old vines on the Gramenon 'estate' at Montbrison sur Lez. This is a very beautiful wine as always and one of my personal favorite wines from anywhere - this takes Grenache to extraordinary levels of refinement and Burgundian levels of attraction and elegance. It is always a little Chambolle-esque with it's silken mouthfeel and sensual lingering fragrance. If any one wine displays the all the qualities that are unique to Gramenon, it is this one. Emotion!

2020 Cotes-du-Rhone 'L'Emouvante'
Usually $104 - Special Offer $99

A couple of years ago Michele mentioned to me that she had a plan for Syrah to sit with her celebrated 'Ceps Centennaires' Grenache - she's used the oldest vines she has on the estate, up on a limestone plateau at 350m altitude. Farmed bio dynamically, as all grapes at Gramenon are, the had harvest grapes are fermented using ambient yeasts but for this wines there is a 60 day maceration. She put in 2 bottles of the 2016 with my order last year and they knocked me out, I immediately got in touch to see if I could buy some but she told me it was allocated, "but don't worry, I made it again in 2017" well here we are again in 2020, this again is a Syrah that can mix it with the Titans and I suspect could live and improve for 20-30 years in a good cellar. Super super

2020 Cotes-du-Rhone 'La Papesse'
Usually $114 - Special Offer $104

This is a spectacular 10ha parcel of old vines that Michelle and husband Philippe purchased in the nineties; it is south of the Gramenon estate in Vinsobres and is mostly Grenache but there are also Syrah vines planted there. The vines these days are about 70 yars old. Michelle was left to develop this parcel herself when Philippe tragically died in a hunting accident in 1998; she in fact sold half the property to the Perrin family of Beaucastel fame so as to concentrate on the parcel she favoured and at a size that she was able to manage. As a wine it is a Vin de Garde as it has the concentration, dimension and density to cellar incredibly well. The fruit glistens as it does in all the wines, it is dark in tone and has a real brooding intensity. It is glorious in the mouth and incredibly long flavoured shaped by fine tannin and vibrant acidity. A wonderous wine but one to keep; once it unravels in years to come it will be a thing of beauty. A favorite of Michele

2020 Cotes-du-Rhone 'La Meme' Ceps Centenaires
Usually $159 - Special Offer $149

In December of 1978 Philippe Laurent and Michèle Aubéry-Laurent bought a barn and 12 hectares of old vines in Montbrison. Their first harvest took place in 1979 with their first cuvee being the Ceps Centenaires; it became a cult wine immediately and has been ever since. The vines that it comes from are about 130 years old these days. This wine is always extraordinarily elegant, fleeting floral aromas and gorgeous, crystal pure fruit flavours fan and dance around the senses. It's a wine that makes me wonder and also ponder - in essence though it's a beautiful wine; graceful and very very sensual. If Grenache were Pinot Noir then this would be Gramenon's Musigny

Maxime Francois Laurent

2020 Cotes-du-Rhone 'Rousset des Vignes Champsaurel'
Usually $69 - Special Offer $64

produced from old vines Grenache (75%) and Syrah (25%) from vines from a single parcel - irresistible scent morphs into the mouth where it's silky texture and fragrant length are very impressive - these vines are on sandy limestone at 400m altitude, this is again a beauty.

2020 Cotes-du-Rhone 'Rubiconde'
Usually $74 - Special Offer $69

produced from old vines Grenache from vines from two parcels; one is Gramenon's neighbour - the vines are 500m from Gramenon. The other is a parcel owned by Maxime's Uncle. The neighbour's vines are 40 years old and the Uncle's are 80 year old. Hand harvested then fermented using a portion of whole bunches in concrete 'cuve beton'. This wine was called 'Pourpre' until this release when he decided to change it to 'Rubiconde' - this reflects the fact that he feels that the wine is more red fruited than purple fruited! As always it is very elegant with lovely grip and superb freshness. As with all Gramenon made wines the mouthfeel is superb with a lovely seamless quality. Glorious Grenache - pretty & floral - the epitome of Grenache's elegance - this is Maxime's La Mémé
