Dr. Edge

Peter Dredge has been honing his craft for the past two decades. As well as steering the ship at the very successful Meadowbank Estate, he also makes alluring wines from Tasmania under his own Dr Edge label.

But if that wasn't enough he also turned his hand to crafting American Pinots from the famed Willamette Valley in Oregon (back when we were allowed to travel anyway). With Covid doing what Covid does it's unlikely we'll see these wines ever again so grab some ofthese delicious 2018 and 2019s while you still can. We're also offering a few of his Tassie cuvees which are deep and intense and won't disappoint.

The wines below are available now at our special offer prices for the next 7 days or until sold out. To place your order, simply click on the links above or return the attached form, by email, by fax on 03 9419 6970 or call us on 03 9419 6990.

2020 South Tasmania Chardonnay
Usually $62- Special Offer $57

Dr Edge Tasmania 'South' Chardonnay is comprised of Single Vineyard Derwent Valley fruit. Pressed to old oak casks, the juice is fermented naturally, matured for 9 months on lees with some casks containing small amounts of whole clusters. Bottled without fining.

"I tried this over the course of two full days, spanning Tuesday-to-Thursday, which is unusual for me and chardonnay, but life is just a bit tricky at present. By accident though it was a good process to go through. My initial impression of this wine was that it’s unbelievably piercing in style, by way of its acidity yes but more so thanks to its intense green/ripe pineapple flavours, matched to citrus and pear, matched to green apple, peach and florals. There’s spiciness in play too, which may but may not be oak related, along withflint notes but it’s hard to take your eyes off that river of pineapple, so to speak. I think absolutely that this is a fine, high quality wine but it’s also bleedingly obvious that it needs some alone time."

2019 Tasmania Pinot Noir
Usually $59 - Special Offer $54

A blend of East Coast, Tamar Valley & Pipers Brook fruit. Two weeks on skins then pressed to oak casks, matured for 9 months and bottled without fining.

"There’s no East, North or South this year, just Tasmania. Smoke taint took out one of the vineyard sources in 2019. This is 50% East Coast (Hazards), 30% Tamar (Holyman) and 20% Piper’s Brook (Bird Bird Bird, Bird is the Word).

It’s light and lucid, a bright cherry sweetness layered with spice and a bit of wetsuit style reduction, and a little fresh mint and rosy perfume. Tannin is light and fine-grained, just tugging away gently through the palate, a coolness of acidity, almost an alpine freshness here, with some dried leaf and mulch layering in some complexity. Finish is more autumn leaf stuff, but pure of fruit underneath, ripe raspberries, and quite long. Oak is not a feature of the wine. It’s a very good thing to drink."

2018 Chehalem Mountains Pinot Noir
Usually $79 - Special Offer $71

Azana Vineyard
Certified Organic & Biodynamic Single Vineyard
Volcanic Soil, Altitude, luscious.

"Chehalem Mountains. Such a good sounding place name. It’s in the northern tip of the Willamette Valley.

Charismatic, and immediately appealing for its distinct personality. It’s ultra-mineral, a smoky pumice stone character, which, in a way, puts me in mind of Etna, though it’s not that, but has a kinship. Texture is a highlight, gentle drag of dusty tannin, set in glistening strawberry juiciness, fruity, yet bony, with cool acidity and heaps good smoky length. It’s a wine of verity, dry wit, and uncompromising volcanic personality. Or something like that."

2018 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir
Usually $79 - Special Offer $71

Blend of the Willamette Valley. Is the whole greater than the sum of its parts?

"I’m guessing this is a blend of the Chehalem and Eola-Amity vineyards, a la Dr Edge Tasmania. Well, like many a Barolo, the blend of vineyards works splendidly.

Red fruit, pepper, ash, fennel and roses. Light to medium-bodied, crisp and frisky, lick of pumice stone tannin, strawberry and raspberry flavour, juicy, mineral, dusty feel with succulence of fruit, and a long dried herb tinged finish. Such energy and verve. Outstanding. Something extra in the glass here, and a delight for lovers of fine Pinot Noir, no doubt."
