Iconic Craiglee Shiraz

by Hugh French | Sep 07, 2021

Craiglee Shiraz

Craiglee comfortably sits alongside other iconic Australian producers for quality, terroir and history but despite that the wines have always remained very affordable. Today we offer the stunning new 2017 Shiraz which will please both the drinker and collector alike. Further to the current offering we also have some back vintages available which would be a welcome addition to any table.

Patrick and Dianne Carmody are the purveyors of this now legendary estate in Sunbury that's been knocking it out of the park for 40 years. Anything but conventional, Patrick holds his wine back longer than most (particularly the reds) so they already have some age and approachability on release.

"Strong winds off the cool Southern Ocean may well help to keep vines and wines fresh. If Craiglee Shiraz is extra-fine, the Chardonnay is rather idiosyncratic (and so is the Shiraz in an Australian context, so discreet is it). Instead of aping the current Australian Chardonnay super-skinny norm, Craiglee’s version is somewhat unreconstructed: exuberant fruit but remarkably high in natural acidity, partly thanks to suppressing the usual softening malolactic conversion."

2017 Craiglee Shiraz
Usually $64 - Special Offer $55

Pure unadulterated Craiglee Shiraz. Nothing like it. It's the fragrance, the confluence of dark and red fruit, the grind of black pepper, the thyme and it's savoury nature. It retains a certain elegance and length across the more medium-bodied palate. Fresh acidity and grainy tannins neatly in tow. Lovely now, even better in years to come.

Jane Faulkner, Wine Companion

Succulent, beautifully balanced, mid-weight Victorian Shiraz. The graceful power here aligns with other Vic Shiraz classics like Mount Langi Shiraz, Best’s Bin 0 et al. Force in a velvet glove. Raspberry fruit is the champion, ripe, gentle, but not underpowered. Plenty of acidity, too, and the tannins have a faint bitterness, just to ground things. Has this beautiful, gently mushroom edge to the red fruit for interest – a crafted, timeless wine.
