Astounding 2016 La Morra Barolo

by Hugh French | Sep 07, 2021

2016 Marcarini Barolo

Manuel Marchetti and his late wife, Luisa, have been in charge of the family winery since 1990 (Luisa's great-great-great-grandfather founded the estate). Marcarini was one of the first producers of Barolo to designate single sites on the label, with single cru wines produced as early as the 1950s.

The Marcarini winery is now into its sixth generation of winemaking. The estate comprises 25 hectares across Langhe and Roero, with the jewel in the crown being in the famed La Mora commune.

Today we have the sublime 2016 La Serra, following April's release of the gorgeous 2016 Brunate which is also available below.

The wines below are available now at our special offer price for the next 7 days only or until sold out. To place your order, simply click on the links below or return the attached form, by email, by fax on 03 9419 6970 or callus on 03 9419 6990.

2016 Marcarini Barolo 'La Serra' DOCG
Usually $129 - Special Offer $119

A Barolo with such intense, fine-grained tannins, yet it’s so deep and poised with polish and energy. Full-bodied, yet it remains agile and layered. Strawberries, bark, hazelnuts and hints of rose petals. Give this four or five years in the bottle, at least. But a classic wine.

So fine, and finely etched. Red fruits, roses, mint, almond, subtle five spice perfume. It’s medium-bodied, fresh and precise, fine brick dust and peppery tannin, quiet succulence of strawberry and other red fruits, spice and liquorice root, long cool finish. So lovely. Energy and charm. Love this wine. And there’s more to come too, I feel.

2016 Marcarini Barolo 'Brunate' DOCG
Usually $179 -Special Offer $159

Menthol and liquorice, porcini mushroom, spice, red and black berries, subdued floral notes. It’s tight, earthy and packed with grainy ‘mineral’ tannin and chalky feel, kind of reticent as at now, but with latent power and perfume to come. Tobacco and chewy feel, on a long firm finish. A lot more grunt this vintage, though that’s a not bad thing either. Wait.

Marcarini's 2016 Barolo Brunate captures much of the mystique of this La Morra site in its beguiling aromatics. Deep, layered and so expressive, the 2016 has a lot to offer. Time in the glass brings out an exotic quality to the red toned fruit, with spice, menthol and floral overtones that linger. I would not be in a rush to open bottles (drink 2026-2036).
