The 2020 season, our 30thharvest……60% down in volume!

The ride was long and radical. When we thought ‘this season has had it all’ it gave some more, and what more it gave! Well, more extreme challenges for much less wine.

Twenty 20 was a challenge and the wines are a blessing to have. Some are beautifully harmonious and well structured, others more elegant and fine boned. With the deep and powerful 2019s and 2021s bracketing them the 2020s are clearly lighter and will take a couple of years to build and fill out. They are certainly delicious, some much more than, but really, it was a season that was hardly 20/20!

2020 Kostas Rind Chardonnay
Usually $65 - Special Offer $60

The 2020 Kostas Rind spent 10 months on yeast lees in French barrels, of which 25% are new, and was bottled in mid February. Typical and distinctive aromas of grapefruit and lemon with jasmine blossom lift from the glass and with time gently creamy and savoury aromas emerge. The palate is fresh, chalky, zesty, harmonious and quite smooth. It’s early days and three years of careful cellaring will see a building of complexity and texture.

2020 Dixon Pinot Noir
Usually $65 - Special Offer $60

The 2020 Dixon spent 10 months in barrel and was bottled in mid February. This wine is a composition of sections of the original 1988 planting and the 2001 Kaye vineyard. It has a lifted nose of roses, red cherries, strawberries, rhubarb and spice. The palate is fresh, supple, smooth, builds in texture and has good length. As always, it will be more complex and fuller in three plus years.

2017 Kaye Pinot Noir
Usually $105 - Special Offer $99

This is obviously a very sentimental wine from our most elevated vineyard, planted in 2001, that pays tribute to my mother, Kaye. It's a vineyard with a stunning perspective over the other vineyards, the winery, house and to the forests and hills beyond. There are some lovely metaphors, no doubt. The site has a lot of quartz and mudstone, a smattering of volcanic soils that have eroded down from the volcanic plateau above, and produces a wine of fragrance, structure and complexity. The 2017Kaye has excellent depth and is gaining earthy complexity. There are red and dark berries mixed with spice, cream and earth on the nose. The palate is fresh, chewy, builds structure and texture as it flows for excellent length. This wine is typically at its best seven to ten years after harvest and this wine is true to that form.

2019 Pyrette Shiraz
Usually $38 - Special Offer $35

We have been delving back into the Shiraz wines and having fun seeing the continuity of style going back two decades now. The seasonal stamp is always there, these are not formulaic wines scrubbed and rubbed into an overriding house style. The harvest date and winemaking are focused on ensuring a balanced wine that shows the markings of the year. As James Halliday says, a Pinot Noir winemaker's Shiraz! The 2019 is a delicious and harmonious continuation of the style with red and dark berries, earth and spice and fine texture and length.

2020 Dhillon Col Mountain Grenache
Usually $44 - Special Offer $40

The wonderful Col Mountain vineyard 2020 Grenache Rosé came and went in a flash (there is more in barrel from 2021) and this tiny release of delicious red wine will follow suit. It is a fine match of climate, site, farming and variety. And then careful winemaking helps it across the line. The wine is made like the pinots noirs at Bindi; open vats, wild yeast, gently worked, malo-lactic and subtle ageing in fine French wood (all old in this case). There is a beautiful raspberry and pippy fragrance. It is very fruit pure but not sweet. The palate is creamy, fresh, balanced, savoury, long and very delicious. It’s a revelation for us!

2014 Dhillon Col Mountain Shiraz
Usually $85 - Special Offer $80

This wine, to state the obvious, has been quite a while coming! In 2014 we began making experimental ferments using four clones from this exciting vineyard and decided to mature the blended bottled wines until we felt they were settled and singing. ...The 2014 is in a beautifully balanced and harmonious place after five years bottle maturation. The nose is deeply layered with earth, spice, red current, dark cherry and plum aromas. Seriously deep and cause for reflection. The palate is mouth-filling and harmonious with fine fruit carrying tannin giving excellent length. We have had fun lining up all the wines made so far from 2014 to 2020 (from barrel) and there is a strong vineyard signature within the context of the different vintages; earth, fruit depth, structure, length.
