2018 Le Grand Rue Grand Cru Monopole

"Mid crimson colour. The nose is more about elegance than weight. A little iron-rich blood orange nose – there is evident iron oxide in the lower part of the vineyard. The glory of La Grande Rue shows in the more sumptuous texture on the palate, and not just the length of the finish, but also the detail. It still does not wish to make a massive statement but it absolutely fulfils what Nicole Lamarche is trying to achieve."

“Interestingly, this is actually quite similar to the nose of the Grands Ech but it's arguably even spicier and quite cool in the context of the 2018 vintage along with a top note of menthol. The pliant medium-bodied flavors possess a decidedly sleek mouthfeel though the tension really builds from the mid-palate to the firm, dusty and very serious finish that offers outstanding length. Patience strongly advised as this is definitely resolutely structured. In a word, excellent.”

2018 Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru

"30 ares in one holding near the route des grands crus. Fresh light crimson with a pink tinge. The bouquet is a little more reticent than the Clos Vougeot today, but with more weight than the Echezeaux. Actually it soon begins to build, offering some rich peony notes alongside the succulent red fruit. Lovely weight at the front of the palate continues all the way through, and the acidity adds its useful freshening touch. Fine long and quite sensual finish."

“Gorgeously perfumed aromas waft from the glass to reveal slightly more elegant and layered aromas of red berry fruit liqueur that are trimmed in hints of sandalwood, violet, lilac and lavender. The mouthfeel of the larger-scaled flavors is at once muscular yet reasonably refined while delivering excellent length on the very firmly structured finale. At present this is somewhat linear and austere, yet my sense is that it will flesh out with extended time in bottle.”

2018 Echezeaux Grand Cru

"The Lamarches are fortunate to have as much as 1.32ha in all, over three plots which are vinified together. Pretty pink purple. The nose offers a little more depth than the 1ers crus without changing register. Fresh red fruits, nicely ripe but not heavy. Alpine strawberry, full red cherry and light raspberry. Beautifully balanced on the palate with the requisite lacy quality and a light touch to the acidity. Fine length."

“A riper nose reflects notes of poached plum, red currant, violet and a plethora of spice suggestions. The supple and relatively forward mid-palate of the moderately dense flavors immediately tighten up on the impressively complex and persistent finish that is shaped by a notably firm tannic spine that will require extended patience to resolve. I like the vibrancy and this is really quite good.”

2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru

“1.36 ha in total across three plots. This has a fuller pink-purple colour than the other wines, and a nose which speaks of its identity more forcefully. Extra rich on the palate – that is by Lamarche standards- but with a fine fresh acidity too, after which the fruit comes swooping back. The tannins are tucked away out of sight. This is really impressive, while remaining true to the Lamarche style.”

“A more reserved nose presents an aromatic profile that is comprised by notes of red currant, pomegranate and discreet nuances of earth and spice. The palate impression of the slightly bigger-bodied flavors is also quite sleek though the punchy, very firm and well-delineated finish is not particularly complex and there is a touch of dryness though I doubt it will last.”

2018 Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru 'Les Chaumes'

"Clear pure ruby colour, while the bouquet remains ultra-discreet. More weight of very fresh fruit appears on the palate and some fine-grained tannins sit alongside the acidity. But it is the length rather than additional intensity which demonstrates the 1er cru quality."

“A slightly more deeply pitched nose features notes of plum-suffused red cherry and sandalwood scents that unveil plenty of Vosne-style spice elements. There is good richness to the caressing and delicious medium-bodied flavors that tighten up somewhat on the lingering and focused finale. This will need to develop more depth with time in bottle but should it do that it should merit the upper end of my projected range.”
