Littorai & Peay Vineyards - The USA's Best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay

by Hugh French | May 18, 2021

Littorai & Peay Vineyards

When it comes to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir of immense elegance and power, look no further than Peay Vineyards and Littorai.

Ted Lemon began Littorai in 1993 after returning home to the US following extensive experience, working for some of the greatest Domaines in Burgundy, most notably, as Winemaker and Vineyard Manager at the prestigious Domaine Roulot. Now considered a hero of the American wine industry, Ted creates what can only be described as the most highly regarded Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the US today.

The team of Andy and Nick Peay, alongside the winemaking wife of Nick, Vanessa Wong, searched tirelessly along the western coast of America to find the perfect site for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Their search ended at the current 35-acre site of Peay Vineyards on the Sonoma Coast, an extremely marginal site that yields tiny crops but delivers intense purity and freshness. In this incredibly remote site, the trio craft delicious wines that are as unique and beautiful as their vineyard (pictured above).

Littorai

There is no doubt in my mind Littorai is one of this country’s crown jewel wineries. Proprietor Ted Lemon has the magic touch with both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

2018 B. A. Thieriot Chardonnay
Usually $205 - Special Offer $189

The 2018 Chardonnay Thieriot Vineyard is by far the most expressive of the 2018 Littorai Chardonnays. Slate, crushed rocks, lemon confit, mint and a touch of new French oak add character. Airy and yet deep, with striking textural complexity, the Thieriot has so much going on.

2018 Charles Heintz Chardonnay
Usually $210 - Special Offer $195

From vines planted in 1982, the 2018 Chardonnay Charles Heintz Vineyard has alluring scents of gunflint, salted almonds, dried apples, white flowers and beeswax. The medium-bodied palate is satiny, salty and perfumed with tangy freshness and layered flavors. What a lovely, energetic expression!

2018 Les Larmes Pinot Noir
Usually $135 - Special Offer $125

Mid pinkish cherry red. Something quite serious and intriguing already on the nose here. A real mouthful of fruit with a hint of pine. Very satisfying – probably the best value of this selection of Littorai wines at the Liberty tasting in November. Medium weight and yet quite delicate. No excess sweetness. Quite appetising and ready – so pretty forward.

2018 Wendling Vineyard Block E Pinot Noir
Usually $185 - Special Offer $174

The 2018 Pinot Noir Wendling Vineyard Block E shows all of the fruit intensity that is so typical of this site, with an extra kick of both acid and tannic clout than has been the case in the past. Perhaps that is the 33% whole clusters, the most since this wine was first made in 2015. The 2018 is going to be fascinating to watch, as it is captivating. Moreover, all the wines I have tasted from Wendling so far have been deeply intriguing.

2018 Savoy Vineyard Pinot Noir
Usually $205 - Special Offer $189

Littorai's 2018 Pinot Noir Savoy Vineyard is fabulous. Bright and focused, with terrific energy, the 2018 is a wine of pure and total class. Lavender, purplish fruit, spice and mint all jump out of the glass. More than anything else, the 2018 is marked by terrific freshness and energy that provide tons of complexity to play off the fruit that comes so naturally here. The 50% whole clusters are not at all evident. This is a stellar wine in the making.

2018 Mays Canyon Vineyard Pinot Noir
Usually $205 - Special Offer $189

The 2018 Pinot Noir Mays Canyon is once again one of the most evocative wines in the range. Nothing really stands out. Instead, the Mays Canyon is a wine of exquisite finesse. Like a cubist painting or improvisational jazz, so much about the Mays Canyon is implied, but not overly stated. That makes it an absolutely gorgeous, contemplative wine that will delight readers for years to come.

2018 One Acre Pinot Noir
Usually $205 - Special Offer $189

The 2018 Pinot Noir One Acre is deep, powerful and explosive. A rush of dark red/purplish fruit, cedar, licorice, menthol, pine and sweet tobacco builds as this super-expressive, potent Pinot shows off its magnificent, shimmering depth and overall complexity.

2018 The Haven Vineyard Pinot Noir
Usually $225 - Special Offer $215

The Pinot Noir The Haven Vineyard Estate is rich and unctuous in the glass. A rush of dark red/purplish berry fruit, blood orange, mint and dried flowers builds as this vivid, polished Pinot shows off everything it's got. The 2018 is striking and exceptionally beautiful, with an interplay of power and finesse that is truly captivating. The 40% whole clusters are seamlessly woven into the wine's fabric.

Peay Vineyards

The Peay wines have been compelling for a number of years. This year's line up is especially stellar.

Peay is in the middle of nowhere. Literally. Reaching the sprawling, rugged estate is an adventure in and of itself. A collection of hillside sites with multiple exposures set within undeveloped forest, Peay is one of the most marginal sites for growing grapes, even within the context of the Sonoma Coast. Two tonnes per acre, the bare minimum for most vineyards, is a rare occurrence. The wines, though, are usually terrific and often magnificent. Readers who have not discovered Peay owe it to themselves to do so. The Pinots, in particular, are worthy of note.

2018 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay
Usually $100 - Special Offer $94

The 2019 Chardonnay (Sonoma Coast) is creamy, ample and seductive. Apricot, lemon confit, mint and white flowers all grace an understated, classy Sonoma Coast Chardonnay that will drink well right out of the gate. The 2019 is a blend mostly from the estate, plus a touch of fruit from Searby.

2018 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
Usually $100 - Special Offer $94

The 2018 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast is very expressive, with warm blackberries, cranberry sauce, blood orange, black tea leaves, forest floor and an undercurrent of dark spices and earth. Medium-bodied and concentrated, it offers Goldilocks ripeness and angostura-laced flavor layers, finishing long and seamlessly fresh.

2018 Pomarium Pinot Noir
Usually $129 - Special Offer $120

The 2018 Estate Pinot Noir Pomarium is a gorgeous wine that's immediately accessible but has the stuffing and structure to age gracefully in the cellar. The nose offers forest floor, wet leaves and laurel, cranberry sauce and blood orange with notes of lavender, garrigue and blueberries. The palate is medium-bodied, expanding outward to super perfumed, concentrated fruits, finely grained and seamlessly fresh with a very long finish.

2018 Scallop Shelf Pinot Noir
Usually $139 - Special Offer $129

The 2018 Estate Pinot Noir Scallop Shelf is gorgeous! The nose offers intoxicating scents of ripe cranberries, rhubarb and tangerine peel with accents of floral potpourri, dusty earth, exotic spices and rose petals. The medium-bodied palate is very finely grained, super fresh and bursting with spicy fruits, finishing very long and layered.
