When most people think of the southern French region of Roussillon, they likely recall its past rather than the exciting transformation underway today. Roussillon is experiencing a revolutionary shift toward fresh, mineral-driven dry wines—some of the finest in France. While regions like Bordeaux and Burgundy are celebrated for their classic wines, Roussillon is making its mark with innovative methods that produce vibrant, distinctly mineral expressions.

The couple met while studying in Burgundy, where they spent years working with some of the region’s most interesting producers, including a long stint alongside Frédéric Cossard. Several visits to Roussillon led them to discover a vineyard high in the hills above the seaside town of Collioure. In Catalan, Pedres Blanques means ‘white rocks,’ and the vineyard takes its name from an outcrop of granite that sits among the three and a half hectares of vines.

They cultivate two parcels—one planted in 1989, the other in 1965—both rooted in the region’s granite and schist soils. Their wines are crafted almost exclusively from Grenache Noir, with a touch of Caladoc in the Rosé. Grapes are hand-harvested in whole bunches, fermentations are spontaneous, and no pumps or filtration are used. These wines brim with character, and with Hiro and Rié’s skill, they achieve remarkable finesse and vibrancy.

2023 Vin de France 'Cabanon' Grenache

"This is a new wine from a newly acquired plot in Trouillas that is planted mostly to Grenache but also the other traditional varieties of the Roussillon. The name Cabanon comes because there is a little bit of Carignan in it that was gifted by Alain Castex. It is a little redder in fruit profile than the Pedres Blanques above but has the same silky purity and sensual harmony. Superb!"

2023 Vin de France 'Pedres Blanques' Grenache

"This is mostly Grenache from head-pruned bush vines of about 50 years of age planted over the granite and schist soils of the Collioure at around 300 metres above sea level. Like at Clos du Rouge Gorge the grapes were fermented as whole bunches in cuve for around a month then pressed and fed by gravity into old foudres. For 2023, again, Hiro has extended elevage to 18 months which has rendered a fabulous wine in every sense. It is a mountain wine - subtle and perfumed black fruit, flowers, graphite and minerals lead into a palate that is a lace and wonder, they have only made eight vintages, this is a young estate but this is magical wine"
