Domaine Bachelet-Monnot - Some have the knack..

Domaine Bachelet-Monnot, founded in 2005, is a culmination of family vineyards and carefully nurtured long-term leases, all managed by brothers Marc and Alexandre Bachelet. Since its inception, the brothers have expanded the domaines vineyard holdings from 6 hectares to an impressive 22 hectares today.

The Bachelet brothers are dedicated to producing exceptional white Burgundies from celebrated locations within the Côte d'Or, including Chassagne-Montrachet, Meursault, and Puligny-Montrachet. Their impressive collection features prestigious Puligny' Premier Crus such as 'Les Folatières' and 'Les Referts,' as well as a prized parcel of 'Bâtard-Montrachet.' While their red wines primarily originate from the lesser-known regions of Maranges and Santenay, Marc and Alexandre have notably elevated the wines of these villages, providing a fascinating glimpse into the untapped potential of Burgundy's terroirs, especially when shaped by such skilled winemakers who genuinely understand the terroir.

The wines from the 2023 vintage reflect a lovely balance, with vibrant energy and remarkable terroir transparency, particularly impressive given the warmth of the growing season. While they promise delightful enjoyment in their youth, they also hold great potential for medium-term aging.

"This comes mostly from Puligny and a bit below Chassagne. Pale colour, almost nutty on the nose. More classic on the palate with flesh and excellent tension. This is a wine with a lot more to offer when it grows up. Drink from 2026-2029."

"A background whiff of roasted hazelnut is present on the elegant, pure and airy aromas of mostly acacia blossom, essence of pear and a hint of wood toast. There is again a lovely sleekness to the palate impression of the punchy and beautifully detailed middle weight flavors that display excellent length on the bone-dry but not really austere finale. This needs to develop better depth but it's really quite promising."

"Pretty aromas of white flowers, pear, apple and anise are complemented by rich and generous, if perhaps not quite as vibrant, flavors that are also seductively textured before culminating in a bone-dry and more complex finale. While qualitatively similar to the Chassagne, these are two very different wines."

"Mid lemon yellow. A little more oak on the nose though the power of the fruit boosts through. This is really complex on the palate – firstly an immense volume of ripe fruit, with a touch of bacon fat, then a little lemon wash. Lots of protein in the wines this year, I am told. Impressive length."

"Pale lemon yellow, with a lightly reductive nose. More of a chiselled than a heady Folatières, though with all the necessary weight of fruit further back on the palate. This is less extrovert than Les Referts but perhaps shows a classier intensity at the finish."

"Three barrels made. Mid lemon yellow. The nose is reserved at first before some riper fruit notes begin to emerge. Rich pears at first, then ripe apples, the merest suspicion of a peach, but all in white fruit mode. A little more flesh behind, with a sense of considerable intensity throughout. We are only seeing the tip of the iceberg."

2023 Maranges 1er Cru 'La Fussiere'

"The 2023 Maranges La Fussières 1er Cru Rouge is blended with 30% whole bunch. This has an understated bouquet with light earthy red fruit with sous-bois and mineral scents. It opens succinctly in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiseled tannins, very poised, airy and transparent yet with real weight and presence on the finish. Bon vin!"

2023 Maranges 1er Cru 'Clos de la Boutiere'

"The 2023 Maranges Clos de la Boutière 1er Cru comes from the estate's oldest vines, over 90 years old. It has a tightly wound yet finely delineated bouquet with blackberry, wild mint and a touch of potpourri. The medium-bodied palate features pliant tannins that lend a silky texture through to the fleshy finish. Lightly spiced with impressive length, this is another extremely well-crafted Maranges from Bachelet-Monnot."
