Chablis best kept secret - Domaine Gautherin

In the late 1950s, Raoul Gautherin founded his Domaine as we know it today, making wine from his family’s vineyards, which date back to 1585. Although Adrien Gautherin, Raoul’s Grandson, has walked in the vineyards and worked in the winery from a very young age, he officially joined the family business in 2008, alongside his father, Alain Gautherin. Adrien has taken the vineyard management and the winemaking to new heights for the family.

Adrien is a thoughtful, energetic winemaker, constantly looking for ways to elevate his wines through improved vineyard practices and innovation in the cuverie. He approaches each vintage with an open mind to produce what he believes will be the best wine.

In our most recent tasting, this approach is clearly working; the wines have never shown better. If you are after classic Chablis, combining intensity with finesse and a clear focus on the terroir, then we can’t recommend these wines highly enough. At these prices, these wines represent fantastic value.

"The 2022 Chablis Vieilles Vignes comes from over 40 years old vines across two or three different selected vineyards. It spent 12 months in barrel and then transferred into tank for 8 months, and finally bottled. This has a little more presence than the Chablis Village, with touches of yellow fruit, hints of crushed stone emerging with time. Quite discrete. The palate is well balanced with a touch of bitter lemon on the entry that lends this edge. Slightly honeyed in texture, yet there is fine tension on the finish and sapidity on the aftertaste. Recommended."

2022 Chablis 1er Cru 'Les Lys'

"The 2022 Chablis Les Lys 1er Cru is the maiden release, hitherto blended with Les Vaillons. Aged in stainless steel for 20 months, this has quite a complex bouquet with hints of lanolin and candle wax–a slightly more resinous bouquet compared to the Vaillons. The palate is very well balanced with a little more weight and rondeur than the Vaillons. Harmonious and light spiced, it lingers nicely on the finish. Lovely."

"15 months of elevage with vines in Lys, Sechets, Melinots and others – 6 parcels covering over 4 ha – nearly a quarter of the domaine...

More direct and incisive – a nice tension. There’s a good structure to back this up too. A touch creamy in the middle but direct too – this has a little strict minerality despite then cushioned texture. Give it another 2 years – it’s super long and a super wine !!"

Ooh – that’s an exciting nose – airy fresh and energetic and with white flower perfume – proper tension. Direct, cool, mineral – that’s a great Chablis – sleek but concentrated – obviously mineral. A finish that slowly fade in a narrow beam of pure, delicious, flavour Yes!!"

"The 2022 Chablis Vaudésirs Grand Cru comes from 56-year-old vines over 0.83 hectares, a relatively significant parcel, 60% aged in demi-muids and 40% in tanks. There is a touch of reduction on the nose here, as it had just been bottled. However, the Vaudesir shows fine delineation, with light walnut and lanolin scents emerging with time. Good complexity. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity–a little more amplitude than the Les Clos. It's strength is the finish, that displays hints of white almond and white pepper, in a very harmonious style. Very long in the mouth. Superb."

Ooh – now that’s engrossing – deep but fresh both mineral and fruit – ripe but vibrant – yes! There’s a good energy here – a little more direct than round – I find this just so delicious and detailed – that’s great today! You can probably keep plenty of years too"

"In bottle nearly a year after 20 months of elevage, all tank. The vines all worked by horse, but not for marketing – I think our soils and so the wines have really benefited.’

Vibrant, quite linear – complex and inviting. Extra wide and mineral. Then bursting forward with intent and energy – slowly fading. Already a very delicious wine – simply lovely…"
