Drouhin-Laroze is a grand domaine reborn. Its origins stretch back to 1850, when Jean-Baptiste Laroze started a vineyard operation in Gevrey-Chambertin. In 1919, his granddaughter, Suzanne, married Alexandre Drouhin, who owned vines in Chambolle-Musigny, and Domaine Drouhin-Laroze was born. The Domaine has been producing wines from the Côte de Nuits’ best vineyards ever since. After sharing the winemaking with his father, Philippe Drouhin took complete control of the vineyard and winery from the 2001 vintage, beginning the reincarnation of this grand Burgundian domaine.
As of the 2017 vintage, Philippe's son and daughter, Caroline and Nicolas, have taken the reins, and as a result, the Domaine looks set to reach even higher levels of quality. Judicious use of whole bunch ferments, depending on the vineyard and vintage, and a more closely managed oak barrel regime designed to reduce oak impact on the wines, are just two noticeable enhancements that have given the wines greater clarity and personality.
The wines of Drouhin-Laroze today represent outstanding value, especially in the context of the superb terroirs and ever-increasing quality coming out of the Domaine. The wines come highly recommended.
