Henri Germain - Meursault's Quiet Achiever

by Hugh French | May 08, 2024

Henri Germain et Fils

"Every time I open a bottle of Germain, I find myself wondering whether I'm sufficiently vocal in my admiration for this estate, a winery that I have regularly characterized as Meursualt's most underrated domain...it's worth reiterating that viticulture here is organic (though uncertified) and vinification decidedly traditional, the wines spending two winters in barrel on the lees, if possible without racking and almost invariably without batonnage. In the domaine's cold cellars, alcoholic and malolactic fermentations are protracted, but Germain is content to let the wines take their time. Percentages of new oak are decidedly moderate (contrary to whatever one might read elsewhere) and derive from Meursault's Tonnellerie Damy. The resulting wines are rich but incisive, with fleshy fruit but firm structural bones that demand time in the cellar. In the last decade, the style has become a little less austere and reductive, probably as much a reflection of climate as of technique, but the domaine remains old-fashioned in the best sense."

2021 Bourgogne Blanc
Extremely Limited - $109

"Outstanding, Top Value. Moderate reduction overshadows the fruit though there is slightly better concentration to the plump but punchy and well-detailed middleweight flavors that deliver fine length on the balanced and moderately austere finale. This could use better depth but given that this is a Bourgogne with aging potential, that should reasonably occur if given a chance."

2021 Meursault
Extremely Limited - $179

"Outstanding. This is also reduced though not so much that wisps of citrus can't be discerned and they are also reflected by the sleek and borderline painfully intense flavors that possess evident mid-palate density as well as excellent balance on the moderately austere, firm and serious finale. This is an impressive built-to-age old school Meursault."
89-92 Points
Allen Meadows, Burghound

2021 Meursault 'Limozin'
Extremely Limited - $239

"Outstanding, Top Value. A slightly riper nose reflects notes of white peach, acacia blossom, lemon peel and a deft application of wood. There is both more volume and richness to the seductively textured and concentrated medium-bodied flavors that flash fine power on the compact, balanced and youthfully austere finale. Limozin is always more interesting in cooler vintages, and this is also an excellent Meursault villages that is absolutely worth your interest."
90-93 Points

2021 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru 'Les Fairendes'
Extremely Limited - $289

"Outstanding. This is even more floral-suffused with its combination of essence of pear, rosemary oil and a hint of orange peel. The larger-scaled flavors possess a completely different mouthfeel as it is robust, muscular and bold while displaying impressive power on the sappy and impressively long finish that flirts with rusticity but doesn't quite cross over. A quality Morgeot that should amply repay extended keeping."
91-93 Points
Allen Meadows, Burghound

2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge
Extremely Limited - $139

"Also light ruby hue. Here too there are pepper and earth influences present on the cool and pure red cherry-scented nose. There is fine intensity to the utterly delicious if not especially dense flavors that also display excellent delineation on the mildly rustic and youthfully austere finale that is noticeably firmer."
87-89 Points
Allen Meadows, Burghound

2021 Meursault 'Clos des Mouches' Rouge Monopole
Extremely Limited - $219

"A slightly deeper ruby adds to the visual appeal. A more deeply pitched and somewhat somber nose speaks of plum, earth and various dark berries. There is a bit more mid-palate density to the vibrant medium-bodied flavors that also conclude in a moderate austere though more finely textured finale. This could be approached young or held for 5 to 8 years first."
87-89 Points
Allen Meadows, Burghound

2021 Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru 'Aux Gravains'
Extremely Limited - $219

"A perfumed and very pretty nose reflects notes of plum, dark currant, violet and a touch of earth. There is excellent energy suffusing the beautifully detailed and lightly stony middleweight flavors that also conclude in a moderately austere, sneaky long and balanced finale. As is usually the case with a typical Gravains, this classically styled effort will need at least a few years of cellaring to unwind."
