Yeringberg's Unmissable 2021 Vintage

by Hugh French | Feb 06, 2024

Yeringberg

Yeringberg's de Pury family has established themselves as one of the leading wine producers in the Yarra Valley, renowned for creating wines that embody the region's utmost finesse and elegance. Situated on the historic grounds of a nineteenth-century vineyard, Yeringberg commits to resurrecting low-yielding vines to craft some of the region's most compelling wines.

The 2021 Yarra Valley vintage offered near idyllic conditions for growers, and Yeringberg has most definitely taken full advantage of this, producing one of their best releases in recent times. With yields intentionally kept low to elevate quality, quantities available are scarce. Make sure to order now to avoid disappointment.

2021 Viognier
Usually $46 - Special Offer $42

"Crushed and destemmed with several hours' skin contact and matured for 10 months in large format oak. Bright gold with green tinges. Richer and more opulent than last year's wine but equally compelling. A heady mix of apricots, just ripened mangoes, orange blossom honey and a little freshly grated ginger. Voluptuous, silken textured and with excellent balance on the palate. Finishes focused and long. A hedonistic wine that's probably best enjoyed in its youth."

2021 Marsanne Roussanne
Usually $75 - Special Offer $68

"62/38% marsanne/roussanne from vines planted between 1973 and ’85. The varieties were picked and made separately with blending just before bottling. Both were fermented in tank before being 10 months in seasoned oak. A bright green gold. Year in and year out, this wine delivers the goods. Pure fruited with stone and orchard fruits, orange blossom, fresh ginger and a touch of spice. It's mouth-filling and textured yet super fresh. Finishes long and with a little apricot pith and fresh lime. Excellent."

2021 Chardonnay
Usually $75 - Special Offer $68

"Fully crushed and destemmed before a combination of natural and inoculated ferments in barrel, some inoculated in tank, then racked to 35% new hogsheads with 35% mlf. A bright green gold. Aromas of ripe yellow peach, a soupçon of freshly churned butter and toasted almonds. While creamily textured and concentrated, there's also a fine bead of acidity running through the wine. Finishes with a gentle pithiness and can be drunk with confidence now and over the next four to six years."

2021 Pinot Noir
Usually $107 - Special Offer $97

"Made from MV6 and an old clone from Great Western planted between 1969 and ’74. Crushed and destemmed with eight to 10 days on skins, 45% new oak. Bright crimson. Aromatically, I can't recall a prettier Yeringberg pinot. It's got delicate new season cherries, strawberries, rose petals and a little nutmeg spice. Gentle and sweetly fruited on entry, it's also earthy and structured with fine yet powerful tannins. Finishes long and with a touch of spice. This is destined to age well."

2021 Shiraz
Usually $107 - Special Offer $97

"Fruit from vines planted in 1999. Picked over 12 days with three different ferments (destemmed and crushed, whole berry and whole bunches), 12 to 30 days on skins and 19 months in oak hogsheads (30% new). No fining. Bright crimson purple. Aromas of boysenberries, dark raspberries, star anise and a gentle waft of oak-derived cedar. Medium bodied, gently plush and silken, this is already a delight."

2021 Cabernets
Usually $107 - Special Offer $97

"A blend of 58/14/14/9/5% cabernet sauvignon/cabernet franc/merlot/petit verdot/malbec. Matured 20 months in French barriques (35% new). Bright crimson purple. From a great year, this is a beautifully fragrant and seductive Yeringberg with its aromas of blackcurrants, blueberries, cherry blossom, violets and just the right amount of oak-derived cedar and pencil-shaving scents. The epitome of medium bodied, it's elegant, discreet and persistent on the palate, even at this early juncture. Equally important, the fruit is perfectly framed by the wine's fine-grained and silky tannins and, as has been demonstrated on many occasions, this will mature slowly and gracefully."
