The Beautiful Clare Valley Reds from Adelina

by Hugh French | Jul 19, 2022

Adelina

Adelina seem to be hitting peak form with the excellent 2021 vintage… These people really know how to grow grapes, and make wine from that.”

Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

"Drawn in the main from Shiraz vines planted in 1904, Adelina’s Shiraz Mataro is one of the great values of our portfolio and with respect to Col, the price probably undersells the quality in the bottle. This is especially true in 2021. The new Field Blend offers a delightfully spirited counterpoint to the traditional old-vine releases. There are plenty of pseudo ‘field blends’ on the market, but this is the real deal. Adelina’s Grenache has never tasted finer—it’s extraordinarily refined in style and abounds with vitality and nuance. Last year we described this wine as ‘a Burgundy lover’s Grenache’; this year only underscores the impression."

2021 Eternal Return Arneis
Usually $29 - Special Offer $25

"Musky perfume, green pear, some raw almond, a citrus and smoky candle thing happening. Fresh, crunch and tang, almost a lime and Riesling-like intensity, a little chalky texture, frisky and pretty long. Maybe not the most typical style of Arneis, but such a good drink. A smattering of dried green herb bitterness in there, which is nice. I like it. Excellent"

2022 Watervale Riesling
Usually $29 - Special Offer $26

"The 2022 finished with a smidge of residual: 3.7 g/L to balance the prodigious acidity of 9.52 g/L. The result is classic Watervale—aromatic and seductive with scents of lemon peel, makrut lime and white flowers leading to an exuberant, pulpy palate driven by piercing acidity and citrus briskness. It’s long, incisive and intense—and numbers among our favourite releases of this bottling."

2022 Polish Hill River Riesling
Usually $29 - Special Offer $26

"Bone dry and just shy of 11%, it’s a more restrained release than the Watervale. Col notes that his wines from this site are getting finer every year, and this is a great example of the progression. Laser-guided wet stone, jasmine and lime skin on the nose give rise to a tightly coiled palate wrapped around a crystalline spine of acidity. An Australian Riesling of wonderful grace and class."

2022 Ruchioch Riesling
Usually $34 - Special Offer $30

"Destemmed and crushed before pressing, the free-run juice was settled, racked, and fermented to near dryness. It is slightly higher in alcohol that the Polish Hill River, but still a dainty 11.2%. The aromas are delicate yet complex—we’re in white flower, wild fern and fennel seed territory here. The palate has balletic poise; it’s elegant and fine yet floods the mouth with chalky texture and steely energy. Expect notes of citrus blossom, lemon sherbet and white flowers, with a twist of juicy phenolics on the stony aftertaste. A stunner of a Clare Riesling and it’s only getting started."

2021 McLaren Vale Shiraz
Usually $34 - Special Offer $30

“Col McBryde one of the best winemakers in Australia, I reckon. Spicy, exotic, blueberry and boysenberry pie, nutty and floral. It’s medium to full-bodied, a great set of deep gravelly tannin and a distinct ‘liquid mineral’ feel to it, if that makes any sense, with cool acidity, and a ferrous and gently saline finish of excellent length, again those tannins really impressive, finishing off the wine beautifully. And what value!”

2021 Cabernet Franc
Usually $44 - Special Offer $37

“Raspberry, sour cherry, floral, some basil, a dusting of cocoa. It’s medium-bodied, clean, a sort of cool feel, which makes it very refreshing, tight fine stony tannin, red berries and redcurrant, a smattering of dried herb and orange peel, and a bright but flavoursome finish of excellent length and clarity, a sort of cranberry crunch to close. Delightful.”

2021 Shiraz Mataro
Usually $44 - Special Offer $37

“Blueberry, blackberry, a dusting of black pepper and clove, grilled meat, liquorice. Medium to full-bodied, blue and black fruits, a subtle tang of orange zest, toasted nuts, silty and sticky tannin, acidity quite lively here, earthy too, a little peat and dried herb, with a tight and tangy finish of excellent length. Slate character on the finish, and again the orange peel offering a subtle bitterness. A little elemental as at now, but a lot of wine in the glass. Needs a couple of years I suspect.”

2021 Estate Field Blend
Usually $55 - Special Offer $50

"There are plenty of pseudo field blends on the market, but this is the real deal and features Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro, Ugni Blanc, Roussanne and Carignan, all randomly grafted in 2015 on a single block of the Adelina Estate vineyard."
Distributor Notes, Bibendum

“A true ‘field blend’. Hooray! Red fruits, a sort of honey/white flower top note, subtle sweet soil-like earthiness too. It’s light to medium-bodied, plenty of crunch and energy, tight, with a stony feel to tannin, maybe some orange peel and cherry pip, with a fresh finish of excellent length and vigour. Very interesting. Really like its dryness and point of difference, in both flavour and texture.”

2021 Estate Grenache
Usually $59 - Special Offer $53

“342 six packs produced of this beauty, which is kind of like Barbaresco, by way of Clare, with Grenache as its muse, though don’t mind me. So fine and brightly lit, with crisp dry acidity and fine brick dust tannin.Spiced strawberry, raspberry and red cherry, a little fennel, almond, something of an Earl Grey tea perfume, in with some other floral things, like dried roses maybe. Medium-bodied at most, a subtle pomegranate tang, wonderful sense of energy and precision, with a very long finish, stony tannin trailing. Beautiful.”

2021 Estate Shiraz
Usually $59 - Special Offer $53

"My word! Blueberry and blackberry, thyme and wild herb, biscuit and baking spices, maybe some liquorice. It’s plump and fleshy, impeccable dense, but sweet, ferrous tannin richness, freshness and blue/black fruit, and a long silty tannin finish offering immense satisfaction. Pulls towards raspberry and bright things in the aftertaste. Brilliant. Superb expression of old vine Clare Valley Shiraz. Will cellar so well, I reckon."
