Two Influential Barolo Masters

by Hugh French | Jun 30, 2022

Luigi Pira & Renato Ratti

The rise of Barolo has been underway for some years now. Due to a combination of energetic producers sharing knowledge, employing more rigorous quality controls and utilising modern techniques and equipment, the quality of the region's wines continue to soar.
As with all things though, advances are made only by trailblazing producers who have come before. Today we have two such producers on offer. Firstly the Pira family who have grown grapes on the slopes of Serralunga since the late 19th Century, followed by Renato Ratti, who was instrumental in devising the modern-day Crus of Barolo that are so integral to the region today.

Luigi Pira

"The story of the Pira family is the story of Barolo, one told about people of great warmth and integrity. Always seeking quality and improvement, the Pira family are workers of the land, using the grape Nebbiolo (and Barbera and Dolcetto) as the medium through which their particular terroir can speak. Like many Langhe families, the Pira’s started as growers, and they eventually established an azienda agricola based in the heart of Serralunga."

2018 Barolo 'Serralunga' DOCG
Usually $119 - Special Offer $109

"Always a blend of the three crus below, the Barolo ‘Serralunga’ in recent times has had the maceration/fermentation time slowed down to 2 weeks to allow for a more gradual and integrated process – all four Baroli are made this way. Once complete, the wine is moved into 25 hectolitre aged barrels for a minimum of 2 years, then rested for an additional year or two (depending on the vintage) before being released to the market. The most approachable of the four Baroli, this is a symphony of elements: porcini, smoke, cola, cherry and spices."

2018 Barolo 'Margheria' DOCG
Usually $155 - Special Offer $139

"Aromas of cherries and raspberries, enriched by perfumed oak. Full-bodied with a dense, silky bead of fruit and tannin that gives good length. The fruit and oak tannins are nicely integrated here, giving a grainy, velvety framework to the wine. The fruit persists nicely. Excellent quality here, but give it another couple of years for even better integration."

2018 Barolo 'Marenca' DOCG
Usually $175 - Special Offer $159

"Ripe red berries on the nose, tinged with some dark, nutty spice and pressed lilacs. Medium-to full-bodied with very fine, integrated tannins and a tight, spicy finish. This is quite closed at the moment, but the intense, balanced core is evident, waiting to flourish."

2018 Barolo 'Vigna Rionda' DOCG
Usually $249 - Special Offer $224

"A tight nose with a blend of fresh red berries and nutshell-like oak. Mineral, floral and light minty notes lurk under the surface. Medium-to full-bodied and layered palate, where the fruit is further condensed by some firm tannin. Polished oak on the finish. Shows excellent promise and will blossom with a few more years in bottle. Nicely done for the vintage."

Renato Ratti
"...Ratti introduced many innovations to the production of Barolo that are considered today to be standard practice... Perhaps Ratti's greatest contribution in this area is his map classifying the great Barolo vineyards, which is still widely used today as a reference tool. Today Ratti's son Piero runs the estate with his uncle, Massimo Martinelli, who is also a highly respected author and scholar in his own right. The estate produces three Barolos. The first of these is the Marcenasco bottling, which is made from a combination of various parcels. There are two single-vineyard wines produced from the Rocche and Conca crus in La Morra. Of the two selections generally Rocche is the more accessible wine, while Concais the more complex and multidimensional wine..."

2018 Barolo 'Conca' DOCG
Usually $249 - Special Offer $229

"Aromas of dried cherries with some spice and a hint of scorched orange rind. Medium-to full-bodied with a silky texture and an almost creamy mouth-feel. Intense, flavorful finish. The very fine tannins build a little towards the end. This has a lighter overall structure this year, but the intensity and focus and is not lacking."

Usually $275 - Special Offer $259

"Aromas of red cherries, redcurrants, strawberries and sweet nuts follow through to medium-bodied, silky palate with ultra-fine tannins that create a light but well-balanced framework. A lighter structure this year, but good intensity and elegance. Best after 2023."
