Beaujolais At Its Best

by Hugh French | Jun 17, 2022

Unbelievable Beaujolais

"2020 is a vintage that will attract yet more devotees to the wines of Beaujolais, a region on the up and up in terms of quality and reputation. Broadly speaking, the 2020s are sinuous and inviting, but the best examples from the Beaujolais Crus combine ripeness with refreshing acidity and site-specificity. The frost, hail and mildew-affected 2021 vintage is a reminder that winemakers here must make hay while the sun shines, and shine it did in 2020."
Will Heslop, Stannary Wine

Chateau Thivin

"Since 1743 our family has been handing down from generation to generation this passion for the wine-grower’s trade, respect for our terroirs, precious know-how, and a quest for excellence.

On 8thJune 1877, Zaccharie and Marguerite Geoffray bought Château Thivin and its two hectares of vineyards surrounding the estate (Le Clos).

Each succeeding generation would contribute new plots of land to build up the estate and would develop the growing and wine-making methods. Today, the 5thand 6thgenerations of the Geoffray family run this small family business, work the estate’s vineyards, and vinify each wine, respecting the terroir of its origin as the seasons change."

2020 Brouilly 'Reverdon'
Usually $55 - Special Offer $51

"The 2020 Brouilly Reverdon has turned out very nicely, bursting with aromas of wild plums, spices, berry fruit, violets and figs. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, with a concentrated core of fruit and impressively tangy acids, it's reminiscent of a livelier version of its 2018 counterpart."

91 Points - William Kelley, The Wine Advocate

2020 Cote de Brouilly 'Les Sept Vignes'
Usually $61 - Special Offer $59

"The 2020 Cote de Brouilly 'Les Sept Vignes' is aged in used barrels plus one or two foudres, Fairly new, which gives a patina of new oak. The bouquet is just beautiful, featuring viviacious red cherries, kirsch crushed violets and iris flower. The palete is medium-bodied with very lithe, almost saturated tannins, and poised and lightly spiced towards the finish. A gorgeous Cote de Brouilly, but give it two years in bottle (If you can resist)"

91 Points - Neal Martin, Vinous.com

2020 Cote de Brouilly 'Cuvee Zaccharie'
Extremely Limited $115

"The very deep and complex nose of forest berries and underbrush gently pulls you into this very concentrated and sophisticated Cote-de-Brouilly, which combines Grand Cru structure with great mineral depth. The tannins still need some time to fully integrate, but they give this a very long life! Sustainable. Drinkable now, but best from 2024."

95 Points - James suckling, Jamessuckling.com

Domaine Mee Godard

"Domaine Mee Godard allows us a glimpse of the future of the Beaujolais region at its best. It’s a small Domaine of six hectares of vineyards, mostly located in the sumptuous Morgon appellation and with a small plot in Moulin à Vent. The uncompromising attitude established by Mee, coupled with very old vines across the estate (60 years of age on average) produces state of the art, profound, complex wines with lots of character. This is a perfect description of the owner, Mee, who bought the domaine in 2013. It’s in adversity and with love that the best wines on earth are made. This is precisely how this Domaine can be described."
Importer Notes, Clos Cachet

2020 Beaujolais-Villages
Usually $54 - Special Offer $51

"Plenty of damson plum and spice here with just a hint of dried strawberry. Generous and well structured for a Beaujolais Villages, then comes the warm and mellow finish that is surprisingly long and elegant for this humble appellation. Drink or hold."

91 Points - James Suckling, Jamessuckling.com

2020 Morgon 'Corcelette'
Usually $85 - Special Offer $79

"Grown on pink granite soil. A wealth of glowing purple fruit, this has impressive density along with very good acidity and persistence"

90 Points - Jasper Morris MW, Insideburgundy.com

2020 Morgon 'Cote du Py'
Usually $105 - Special Offer $99

"Rich purple colour. This has the most engaging note to date, the most intense fruit. Concentrated liquid strawberry spreads evenly across the palate with a good mix of tannin and acid to provide the structure. That little volcanic freshness at the finish."

91 Points - Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com

2020 Moulin-a-Vent 'Au Michelon'
Usually $109 - Special Offer $104

"Wait for the slow burn, as this stunning Moulin-a-Vent moves from pure red and black-cherry fruit to tannic and mineral depth. Very firmly structured, but this isn’t a jot too much at the powerful and very focused finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2023."

94 Points - James Suckling, Jamessuckling.com

Jean-Marc Burgaud

"I would serve one of Burgaud’s Morgon wines to anyone unconvinced that Beaujolais can make world-class wine. He just has that “touch”. Consistency runs through his range, although his Morgon Côte du Py is blessed with je ne sais quoi and, as proven by my recent “Mature Burgundy” piece, inbuilt longevity."
Neil Martin, Vinous.com

2020 Beaujolais-Villages 'Les Vignes de Lantignie'
Usually $46 - Special Offer $41

"The 2020 Beaujolais-Villages Les Vignes de Lantignié has turned out beautifully, bursting with aromas of blackberries, spices and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, ample and succulent, with lively acids, melting tannins and a beautifully defined finish, this is worth a special effort to seek out. It's a benchmark for the appellation and the region, plus it’s a terrific value."
92 Points - William Kelley, The Wine Advocate

2020 Morgon 'Les Charmes'
Usually $64 - Special Offer $58

"The 2020 Morgon Les Charmes wafts from the glass with aromas of cherries, cassis, sweet soil tones, violets and peonies. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and vibrant, with a fleshy core of fruit, ripe tannins and lively acids, it's nicely concentrated, concluding with a long, perfumed finish."
93 Points - William Kelley, The Wine Advocate

2020 Morgon 'Cote Du Py'
Usually $74 - Special Offer $66

"The 2020 Morgon Côte du Py represents a blend of six hectares from around the climat, each with its own attributes. It has an intense bouquet of black cherries, black olive and saline notes, all very well defined with wonderful focus. The palate is medium-bodied with silky-smooth tannins, superb mineralité and a harmonious finish featuring black cherries, blueberry, blood orange and citrus fruit, full of nervosité and admirably persistent. Burgaud said that he had been advised to bottle the various plots separately, but I think this blend represents more than the sum of its parts."
94 Points - Neal Martin, Vinous.com
