The finest Albarino

by Hugh French | May 20, 2022

Nanclares y Prieto

(Alberto) Nanclares and (Silvia) Prieto together make intense, transparent, Atlantic-influenced old vine Albariño.

They farmorganically and employ a restrained hand in the cellar, only using native yeasts and no additions apart from modest amounts of SO2. Malolactic fermentation rarely occurs, and the wines spend a good amount of time (often a year or more) on their lees before being bottled without clarification or filtration.

Through this, the pair have managed something very rare: the refinement of Albariño into angular, age-worthy wines that express the fascinating terroir of the Rías Baixas.

2019 Albarino 'A Grana'
Usually $75 - Special Offer $69

"The chestnut barrel used was bought in 2016, so the effect is milder each year. I tasted it next to the 2020, and the two vintages are very different; this is clearly riper in the nose, but it has a very fresh palate where it feels vibrant. It keeps a moderate 12% alcohol, as they harvested early to keep it that way and also to keep the acidity. Since 2016, they have been harvesting very early. They produce between 1,200 and 1,300 bottles from 1,000 liters. It feels like the nose and the palate are not from the same vintage, a 2019 nose and a 2020 palate."

2019 Albarino 'Soverribas'
Usually $75 - Special Offer $69

"I love the 2019 Soverribas. It used to be produced with the grapes from a single-vineyard Albariño from a plot in Meaño on sandy granite, but in 2019, they had such low yields that the Coccinella and Crisopa wines were not produced in 2019 and their grapes went into this wine instead. So, that might be the reason for a little more complexity here. It fermented in the same 2,200-liter oak vat as in previous years. It's super tasty and vibrant with a salty touch."

2020 Albarino 'Nanclares'
Usually $75 - Special Offer $69

"I like the palate of the 2020 Alberto Nanclares a little better than the 2019. There is more freshness here, and the wine feels a little more complete; it's tasty but not as saline as the Tempus Vivendi. Only 1,915 bottles were produced. It was a very low-yielding year; in the past, they produced close to 10,000 bottles. They will go to some 8,000 bottles in 2021."

2020 Albarino 'Paraje Mina'
Usually $75 - Special Offer $69

"They decided not to produce the 2019 of some wines, as they lost 70% of the grapes. So, I jumped to the 2020 Paraje Mina, which represents the origin of the winery, as it comes from the vineyard from the house that Alberto Nanclares bought in 1993. The wine has changed over time; this is now very civilized, with a lot of acidity (one of the highest in 2020) but not noticeable, and it feels quite classical and is clean and harmonious and very long. There are only 600 bottles from the single 500-liter oak barrel they produced in 2020."
