Barolo from a 4th Generation Master

by Hugh French | Sep 08, 2021

Brezza

When considering the Barolo region and its respective communes, arguably the spiritual and certainly geographical centre is the commune of Barolo. Nestled high on the outskirts of this village in the famed Cannubi Cru is where you’ll find the cantina of Giacomo Brezza, proudly managed by 4th generation family member Enzo Brezza. The family have been based here since 1885, placing them firmly in the classical or traditional camp. Although many producers may have swayed from one side to the other, Enzo has kept things as they have been since the start. Over the years, a project close to Enzo’s heart has been maintaining and protecting his vineyards, which lie primarily in the Barolo Commune, including the prestigious Crus of Sarmassa, Cannubi and Castellero. Organic farming has always been their viticultural ethos. Still, since 2014 all wines are now certified and, in many cases, sealed with ‘Vinolok’ glass cork, which in Enzo’s words ‘respects the tradition but embraces progression.

2019 Langhe Nebbiolo DOC
Usually $45 - Special Offer $40

Here's a fun and informal wine to pair with a simple tomato and mozzarella pizza, maybe with a few flakes of hot chili pepper. Closed with a glass cork, the Giacomo Brezza e Figli 2019 Langhe Nebbiolo is a lean and compact expression with tangy forest berry and bitter almond. The bitterness of the wine needs to pair against some cheese or a creamy dish.

2017 Barolo DOCG
Usually $109 - Special Offer $102

The 2017 Barolo is a beautiful entry-level Barolo. Super-ripe red cherry, kirsch, mint, sweet spice and rose petal are front and centre. This supple, open-knit Barolo has so much to offer. This is a pretty ripe style, but then again, it is 2017. All the elements are so nicely balanced

2017 Barolo 'Cannubi' DOCG
Usually $145 - Special Offer $135

Often spoken about as the most important vineyard in the region, Enzo Brezza’s plot sits in the historical heart of the 5 sub-zoned MGA – ‘Cannubi’ ( the other 4 subzones that make up this MGA are Cannubi Boschis, Cannubi Valletta, Cannubi San Lorenzo and Cannubi Muscatel). With an even mix of clay, silt and sand, these Tortonian soils provide wonderful growing conditions for this southwest facing single Cru Nebbiolo vineyard. It is made up of the ‘workhorse’ clone Lampia and the more concentrated but temperamental Michet and sits at an average altitude of 250m. Fruit is handpicked and once in the winery, is de-stemmed into steel vats for fermentation which usually takes approx 7 to 8 days, followed by the post fermentation maceration.Usually this maceration would be for 2.5 to 3 weeks, but in 2017, the juice was pressed after 2 weeks. Once complete, the wine is racked off into large Slavonian Botti for another 2 years.

2017 Barolo 'Sarmassa' DOCG
Usually $159 - Special Offer $149

The 2017 Barolo Sarmassa is a powerful, burly wine. Darker shades of Nebbiolo emerge from a Barolo that is at once powerful and translucent. Cinnamon, orange peel and star anise add an exotic flair. I would give the tannins a few years to soften. The 2017 Sarmassa is a Barolo with real staying power and substance.

Antonio Galloni (Vinous)

Firmly structured, this opens with aromas of star anise, leather, camphor and scorched forest floor. Full-bodied and still youthfully austere, the palate offers Morello cherry, licorice and tobacco framed in tightly wound, assertive tannins. It's nervy and needs time to fully develop to its full potential.
