MW Wines Top Ten New World
Wines of 2020

Despite all that 2020 has thrown at us all we have seen so many great wines come through our doors this year, and narrowing it down to just ten wines was a challenging task. These new world wines below amazed us this year and are deserved of their place in our top list, but as mentioned, there are plenty more that would have been right at home within the rankings.

All of these wines are in stock and available for collection from us at 125 Cambridge Street, Collingwood VIC 3066.

If you require delivery before Christmas please contact us ASAP on03 9419 6990 or shop@mwwines.com.au to check whether this is possible and the cost involved.

Non-urgent deliveries will resume from 4 January 2020 (weather permitting).

To place your order, click on the links below or return the attached form, by email, or callus on 03 9419 6990.

2019 Kumeu Village Chardonnay
Buy Now - $24

If Michael Brajkovich MW were a Burgundian rather than a New Zealander, he would be among the most celebrated white winemakers in the Côte de Beaune, right up there with the likes of Dominique Lafon, Pierre-Vves Colin Morey and Jean-Marc Roulot. The good news for us is that we can buy his amazing Chardonnays at ludicrously cheap prices. This is only his entry-point wine, but is typically well balanced, refreshing and focused, with just a hint of oak spice, leesy complexity, some struck match undertones and a chiselled, refreshing finish. A Kiwi wine that’s better than many Puligny-Montrachets.

2019 Felton Road Bannockburn Pinot Noir
Buy Now - $79

Punches well above its Bannockburn ‘village’ designation, being a blend of Felton Road’s four primely situated vineyards: Cornish Point, Calvert, MacMuir and The Elms. 20% was retained as whole clusters with a moderately long maceration, and aging for just over a year in artisan Burgundian oak, 27% new. A serious wine with considerable definition and poise.

2019 Cincuenta y Cinco Pinot Noir
Buy Now - $109

The blue-fruit character is impressive with intense, violet and floral character, which turns redder with earthier notes. Full-bodied, tight and very chewy, yet the tannins spread across the palate, releasing pure, seductive fruit and tense, bright acidity. Try after 2022.

2019 Shaw & Smith M3 Chardonnay
Buy Now - $49

Shaw + Smith M3 Chardonnay is in quite exceptional form.

Brilliant release. Great intensity both to the palate and the finish and with plenty going on besides. Flint, smoke, grapefruit and stone fruit characters but it’s the emphatic energy of the finish that really sets it apart. One sip and I was hooked, convinced, and in its thrall.

2019 Bindi Wine Growers Dixon Pinot Noir
Buy Now - $63

The Wine Formerly Known As Composition. I do like the personalisation of the wines, increasingly, from Bindi. Vigneron Michael Dhillon does few actions without meaning. It’s a mix of declassified Original and new K Block fruit. I tried all four (new) pinot noir releases blind, initially, and Dixon was very, very impressive. Indeed, when I showed the wines to others, this was the one drunk the most, even with Block 5 in the mix. It invites you into a sense of gusto.

It’s a forward and obvious wine but inviting and delicious. Chock full of dark cherry, kirsch, bay leaf and anise, layered with light clove and cedar character and feeling proud, full and generous. It sits on the palate with generosity but freshness, slick texture, a fresh, minerally, cool finish with a roll of chompy tannin. It feels prouder and bolder than most Bindi wines, but it finds easy communion with pleasure.

2019 Tolpuddle Chardonnay
Buy Now - $83

A strikingly beautiful chardonnay with its flowery bouquet bearing witness to the sheer purity of the incredibly long palate, the full palette of chardonnay flavours on display. Nectarine, white peach and grapefruit zest are sewn together by an invisible silver thread of acidity.

2019 Jasper Hill Georgia's Paddock Shiraz
Buy Now - $92

A traditional expression from Jasper Hill. Great farmers, great transmitters of house style, great lo-fi approach to winemaking.

Bold and rich red of intensity, ripeness of fruit, flesh and pummeling tannin. Inky, ripe plummy fruit, huge dusting of brown spices, violets, touches of pepper and waves of thick, minerally, woody tannin. Composed, intense and powerful, it’s a memorable wine of generosity and penetrating presence.

2018 Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier
Buy Now - $129

Incredibly complex aromas of baking spices, fresh red fruit and a fine and elegant, floral edge, as well as red cherries, raspberries and red plums. This is phenomenal, so precise and concentrated with such detail and power, delivered with elegance and precision. The palate is super long. The best vintage made at Clonakilla to date! Perfection! Drink now, but better from 2026. Screw cap.

2018 Mount Mary Quintet
Buy Now - $165

Stands proudly at the head of the Mount Mary portfolio. A blend of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc and 5% each of Malbec and Petit Verdot, each variety handled according to its structure. Open/static fermenters, wood/stainless steel, 10-14 days on skins, 35% new oak from a range of coopers and forests, 16-20 months in barrel. Mesmerisingly silky, with a kaleidoscope of fruit and secondary flavours.

2017 Bass Phillip Premium Pinot Noir
Buy Now - $249

This wine is all about the peacock's tail and the lingering aftertaste. The bouquet is perfumed and very complex, wandering from earth to shrub and tree with tangy herbal earthy flavours and aromas. On retasting, red fruits have made their appearance, the flavours lustrous and lingering.
