    Incredible Dr Loosen

    by Dave Shoobert | Jul 10, 2025

Weingut Dr. Loosen has influenced the wine world for over 200 years. Under Ernst Loosen since 1988, the estate has become renowned for its exceptional vineyards along the Moselle River, producing wines of remarkable depth, clarity, and complexity. Traditionally known for its diverse range of wines from the German Prädikat pyramid, the estate balances natural sugar with the racy acidity typical of Mosel wines.

In addition to its celebrated sweeter wines, Dr. Loosen is also distinguished for its world-class dry wines, thanks to the influence of both sides of Erni’s family. The Grosses Gewächs (GG) wines represent the pinnacle of the estate's dry offerings, showcasing the terroir of the Mosel with their complex, mineral-driven profiles and focused acidity. Each vineyard—like the volcanic Würzgarten, elegant blue slate Sonnenuhr, and iron-rich Treppchen—contributes to the estate's status as one of the great wine producers in the world old.

"This year is a milestone for the Dr. Loosen Estate and we can only fully understand Erni’s excitement. The 2023er range is everything one loves about Mosel wine: The dry wines are precise, balanced, and packed with fresh flavors, the fruity-styled ones entice one with mouthwatering zest, and the sweet ones offer a great combination of luxurious and fresh flavors. We want to particularly highlight the superb 2023er Treppchen Kabinett, one of the finest of the vintage. Also the top GGs from the Estate have a superb sense of balance, and the 2018er GG Réserve are simply stunning and easily the finest since the great 2012ers. In particular, the Prälat GG Réserve is an epic effort. And, as if this was not enough, lovers of mature Riesling can now also rejoice as the three mature Tradition bottlings released this year are simply stunning. Dr. Loosen manages the tour de force to produce quite some quantities AND be a source of some of the finest Riesling money can currently buy!"

2018 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr GG Reserve

    Usually $249

    Now $229

"The 2018 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Im Laychen Grosses Gewächs Réserve Alte Reben is a late release. The wine is from the oldest parcel Loosen owns on this site. It has been owned by the Loosens since 1911. The wine spent two years on lees in Fuder and four years in bottle before release. Notions of juicy, fine, tart apple blend with exquisitely aromatic lime and lemon oil against a backdrop of cool slate and the merest echo of freshly toasted white bread and slight smoke. The longer it breathes, the more lifted and aromatic it gets. The palate is like a balm – serene, limpid and concentrated, with the inherent elegance of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr and its statuesque structure and inherent serenity. Both the slenderness and freshness are astonishing for the hot 2018 summer and so surprising youthful and long with that citrus elegance. Wow."

"The 2018er Ürziger Würzgarten Unterst Pichter Réserve Alte Reben, as it is referred to on the front label (the reference to GG is left for the back label and GGR is engraved on the bottle), was made from parcels of very old un-grafted vines in the prime Pichter sector and was fermented in oak with ambient yeasts and aged on its gross lees for 24 months before being bottled. This wine offers a beautiful nose made of cassis, white flowers, earthy spices, smoke, and a hint of creaminess. It is beautifully elegant and intense on the palate, where the fruity side is beautifully wrapped into herbs and spices. The finish is gorgeously playful, subtly silky, and hugely precise. What a great dry Riesling in the making!"
