About the producer
Conti Costanti is one of Brunello di Montalcino's founding estates, its Sangiovese vineyards sitting just east of the town, directly neighbouring Biondi-Santi. The Costanti family's presence in the area is documented back to 1555, and it was Tito Costanti, a lawyer and winemaker by trade, who in 1869 became one of the first to put the name "Brunello" on a bottle. The estate's public reputation, however, was built later, by Count Emilio Costanti, a physician and grape-grower who began selling Brunello commercially in the early 1960s, at a time when fewer than a dozen producers in Montalcino were making it at all. Without children of his own, Emilio traced the family's sole living descendant: Andrea Costanti, a geology graduate from the University of Siena with no background in wine. Andrea took over the estate in 1983 and has run it since, working today with consultant oenologist Vittorio Fiore and serving a term as President of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino. Under his stewardship the estate has become known for elegant, precise, terroir-driven Brunello, certified 100% organic, sourced entirely from the family's own Colle al Matrichese cru.
