    Must Buy 100 Point Brunello

    by Hugh French | May 20, 2022

    Conti Costanti & Fuligni

"many of the 2017s he tasted were chewy and slightly aggressive, meaning they need more time in the bottle to come together. And many are also very full-bodied with a dense mouthfeel. They are a world away from the sleek, pure, structured and sophisticated 2016 Brunello Riservas he is also tasting....

Although all of this is worrying to Brunello lovers, there are a number of outstanding Brunellos from 2017 out there. They have freshness and balance and are not overdone. They are the result of careful work in the vineyards as well as precise winemaking in the cellar. It also helped if producers had high-altitude and/or north-facing vineyards. Regardless, it took a lot of work to make a top wine in 2017."

    Conti Costanti

The historic Costanti Family can trace its winemaking roots in Montalcino as far back as the Renaissance; however, until the early 1960s, their wines were barely seen on the market. Instead, they were tightly held and only traded within a close circle of friends and family. Today Andrea Costanti heads the estate and creates beautiful wines of elegance, complexity and longevity alongside trusted oenological consultant Vittorio Fiore.

    2017 Brunello di Montalcino DOCG
    750ml Offer Price $249

    Magnum Offer Price $599
Extremely Limited (1 per Customer Only)

"Extremely elegant and focused, this compelling wine defies the heat of the vintage, starting with a heady fragrance of ripe dark-skinned berries, violet, camphor, dark spice and whiffs of crushed herbs. On the linear, elegantly structured palate, tightly woven but extremely polished tannins accompany juicy Marasca cherry, blood orange, licorice and white pepper while fresh acidity keeps it balanced and fresh."

    Fuligni

This beautiful property, surrounding a 16th century Medici villa, was founded in 1923 by a descendant of the Venetian Fulignis. Although the wine labels still bear that city’s symbol, the lion of St. Marco, the family has long been thoroughly Tuscan. Now directed by Maria Flora Fuligni and nephew Roberto Guerrini Fuligni, this venerable estate produces superb wines considered among the best in Montalcino.

    2017 Brunello di Montalcino DOCG
    750ml Offer Price $249

Magnum Extremely Limited (1 per Customer Only) $599

"Developing deep ruby. Perfumed red fruit that rises up from the glass like a cloud. Sappy, concentrated cherry fruit that is still embryonic. Bags of gravelly tannins masterfully kept in check by the fruit. Very long and focused, and deserves more time in the bottle."
