Ravishing Rhone from 2019 and 2020

by Hugh French | Jun 17, 2022

Domaine Vincent Paris & Domaine Roger Sabon et Fils

It seems that the Rhone Valley is going through a 'purple patch' of sorts with a collection of very strong recent vintages. Beginning with the North's powerful display in 2015, the South's supremely balanced 2016s, followed by consecutive solid years for both through to 2018, we're now seeing the 2019s and 2020s arrive on our shores, and they do not disappoint.

Below we have a couple of producers that have managed to take full advantage of the favourable conditions and deliver spectacular wines from both the North (Domain Vincent Paris) and the South (Domaine Roger Sabon et Fils). However, as always, the supply of these wines is meagre, so make sure to take the initiative and purchase yours today.

All wines below are available now at our special offer prices for the next 7 days only. To place your order simply click on the links below or return the attached form, by email, by fax on 03 9419 6970 or call us on 03 9419 6990.

Domaine Vincent Paris

Vincent Paris has been creating wines in the northern Rhone Valley for some time, following in his family's footsteps and eventually taking over the vineyards after retirement. Currently, Vincent sits as the co-president of the Cornas appellation; he leads by shining example, creating wines of power and elegance while farming the steep slopes along the Cornas amphitheatre. Minimal intervention, organic viticulture and preservation of his ancient (almost 100-year-old) vines are all great reasons why the wines he produces showcase the region and his excellent winemaking ability.

2020 Cornas 'Granit 30'
Usually $76 - Special Offer $71

"100% Syrah. Cask sample.
Lovely expression of fruit on the nose; vineyard-fresh with a cassis edge. Full and driven on the palate. Lots of energy; freshness as well. Great balance, those polished tannins providing some length."

2020 Cornas 'Granit 60'
Usually $109 - Special Offer $99

"100% Syrah.
Subtle. An understated yet concentrated wine with lovely sweetness of fruit, fine tannic structure, integrated oak. All the components here are in fine balance. Dark olives, sweetness of berry fruit. Intriguing mineral and floral finish."

Domaine Roger Sabon et Fils

"Long regarded as a reference point for this magnificent appellation, Roger Sabon is a great source of traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape where the expression of fruit and terroir is everything and oak is treated with caution. Sabon makes wines of concentration, flesh and finesse utilising foudrés, concrete and second use barriques for elevage.
Sabon’s Châteauneuf’s typically benefit from medium term cellaring, from four years for the ‘Olivets’ up to ten years for the ‘Prestige’"

2019 Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Les Olivets'
Usually $99 - Special Offer $89

"80% Grenache. 10% Syrah & Cinsault Dark ruby. Fresh cherry, dark berries, pungent flowers and hints of musky earth and garrigue on the fragrant nose. Pliant and expansive on the palate, offering juicy red and dark berry, candied violet and baking spice flavors and a hint of mocha that adds appealing sweetness. Finishes long and gently chewy, with well-knit tannins and lingering spiciness."

Josh Raynolds, vinous.com

"It's a rich, mouth-filling, fleshy, wonderfully textured, medium to full-bodied effort offering lots of meaty black fruits, peppery garrigue, and meaty nuances, ripe, soft tannins, and a great finish. It's well worth seeking out and ideal for drinking any time over the coming decade or so."

2019 Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Cuvee Reserve'
Usually $119 - Special Offer $109

"Gorgeous blackberry and morello cherry fruits as well as roasted herbs and licorice emerge from the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Réserve, a rich, full-bodied, downright decadent 2019 with sweet tannins and a broad, expansive mouthfeel. It has plenty of up-front appeal with its fruit yet has a solid spine of tannins that are going to keep it drinking nicely for 15-20 years."
94 Points
Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com

"Scents of plum and dark chocolate. Full-bodied, dense and packed with potential, it's also creamy and supple and finishes long and velvety."

2019 Chateauneuf-du-Pape'Cuvee Prestige'
Usually $169 - Special Offer $159

"One of the top vintages for this cuvée, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Prestige features intense aromas of black cherries and purple raspberries, without the dark chocolate nuances that appear in the other 2019s at this address. It's full-bodied, dense and concentrated, big but also silky and fine, with a long, elegant finish. It's a Grenache-led assemblage of lots from the lieux-dits of les Brusquières and Cabrières."
97 Points
Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate

"Slightly more straight, focused, and elegant, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Prestige is a brilliant 2019 in every way. Pure blackberries, black cherries, graphite, crushed stone, and peppery herb notes define the nose, and it's medium to full-bodied, with remarkable purity and a blockbuster of a finish. This is one classy, seamless, elegant Châteauneuf du Pape that will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and have 25 years of overall longevity."

Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com

"Firm nose, has a sweetness of fruit and a slight sweaty saddle-leather character behind it. Very primary fruit and liquorice core with distinct minerality and firm, refined tannins. Really young and very tight but there is a fresh core here waiting to burst out."
